This morning when I went to the poultry hut to let out the hens, ducks and guinea fowl, I was met with the sight of my beloved white hen laid out on the floor. It was too late she had already passed away. I can’t tell you how sad I am.
My dear friend Des gave me Hatty and her hen friend Hetty, who didn’t have a long life, back in the Summer of 2004. I have had Hatty, the white leghorn, for nearly five years and she has given me great pleasure with her lovely white shelled eggs and all the lovely memories. It may sound strange to some of you but Hatty was my pet hen. She would follow me into the garden when I was gardening and have a nosey at what I was doing, although I think she liked to think that she was the boss, well I have to admit she was. She would tell me off if I went close to her nest sites, which ranged from on top of the mill to inside the silage feeder or on top of the silage wrap mountain!
I made a cake of Hatty the Hen for my nephew’s second birthday and Hatty even has her own Cool Chick merchandise!
As a tribute to her and to let me look back over the five years she has been on the farm, I am going to put together slide show of photographs of Hatty the hen, so watch out for the Hatty Hen Slideshow.
She was a clever hen in more ways than one and she even had some penpals. Hatty the hen will be sadly missed. Rest now my sweet little hen. Goodbye and farewell.
