Fencing Hens To Protect Against Foxes

My friend Trisha from Birdtablenews has sent me a message on my farmingfriends twitter page to say, “We have 4 hens and can’t put them out because of a fox. We are in middle of fencing a small field that has a hen hut, do you think that putting up a large fence will keep foxes out?” Trisha

Fencing used to protect hens from foxes needs to be at least 6 feet (2m) tall with an overhang at the top tp prevent the fox climbing over it. Please note that foxes can climb.

The fencing also needs to be dug into the ground to a depth of at least 30 cm to prevent the fox from digging under it.

Foxes can bite through ordinary chicken wire. You can get chain link fencing.

Electric fencing can also be used to protect hens from foxes.

Let me know how you protect your hens from foxes and the type of fencing you have.
