braised celery is lovely. boil it first to tenderise, then bake it in the oven with olive oil and sweet potato, or on its own with a roast or garlic and onions

Brussel sprout soup? Although given the choice I know what I would pick!!
Just had a look in a veg book and there is a recipe for roasted celery and flageolet soup? that might be ok... I have actually heard that roasted celery is nice (if celery can ever be that) so perhaps try that?
let me know if you want the soup recipe...

Hello FF's!
I have lots of celery plants! Any ideas on what to do with them to put them in jars? I have tried to find a celery chutney or pickle, to no avail.
I wouldnt imagine it could be the sole ingredient of a chutney or pickle, can I put it in with some courgettes, apples and onions do you think? Or how do you make picalilli? Does that have celery in it!
Thanks guys!

I make beetroot cake - really moist and delicious. Use a carrot cake recipe and substitute grated raw beetroot. Interestingly I thought it would be an amazing colour but actually it ends up cake colour!

My children who will not go near beetroot gobble this up and have no idea!
Ingredients
175g light muscovado sugar
175ml sunflower oil
3 large eggs , lightly beaten
140g grated beetroot
100g raisins
grated zest of 1 large orange
175g self-raising flour
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 tsp ground cinnamon
½ tsp grated nutmeg (freshly grated will give you the best flavour)

175g icing sugar
1½-2 tbsp orange juice

oooopppsieee silly me lol yeh sure its this :)

Ingredients

    * 12 x organic egg yolks
* 150g unrefined caster sugar
* 500ml whole milk
* 500ml double cream
* 5-6 medium beetroots, cooked until al dente, peeled and pureed

METHOD

1. Beat the egg yolks and sugar together until smooth. Put the milk in a pan and bring to just below boiling, then remove from the heat. Leave to cool slightly, then pour the milk on to the egg and sugar mixture, whisking all the time.

2. Pour the mixture in to a clean pan and heat gently, stirring all the time, until the custard thickens enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon. Don't let it get too hot or it will split. Remove from the heat. Strain through a sieve and leave to cool, then chill, covered with a circle of greaseproof paper to prevent a skin forming.

3. When cold, stir in the cream and beetroot puree. Pass through a fine sieve. Churn the mixture in an ice cream maker until frozen.

4. Depending on the capacity of your ice cream maker, you may need to churn the mixture in batches, or you could simply halve the quantities.

the texture is soooooooooooooooooooo creamy we all really enjoyed the flavour (the beetroot is suttle but you can tell it's there)

I do not know if they are universal in fitting, but if you want I could send you it. I am not able to do much baking unfortunately and it would be good to see it used.

Hello,
Nothing to do with our feathery or furry friends but about my Kenwood mixer I inherited! Its old and battered but I love it. I have no idea what model it is and it only came with a whisk and I would LOVE a dough hook!! I would bake bread every day (so much easier than kneading!) So I was wondering does anyone know where to find the model or if they are just universal hooks that fit all kenwoods?
Thanks guys!!

no prob :) you will really see a difference, we normally do all the marked ones and any really clustered bunches you end up with more fruit then if you don't thin them as the fruit is a lot bigger so you get more flesh and weight :)

we have real heavy rain today and the fruit trees are taking a battering :( the ducks are loving the fruit thats falling off though grrr I can't get to them before them as I am at work but I can see them through the window hehe cheeky monkeys only a hour to go till I can grab a few though hehe

yeh I bought some bigger nets for next year lol

our plum has so much fruit on a huge branch snapped :( goats loved it though :(

did you thin out your plums when growing? usually this is the case when you have so much fruit but small ones, we go around all our trees and thin them out so the fruit which is left on can get to its max size if there is too many the tree struggles to feed them all hence them being smaller :) we took away 3 bin bags of fruit away to get the others bigger , goats loved that also hehe the ducks eat the ones on the floor and the apples

I do know you should try to thin them out though :) (take the fruit which is in between other fruits so the surrounding fruit gets the space of the one you took away) it takes time but is well worth it when you crop huge tasty fruit and a lot of it :)

My father in law has a battle each year against the black birds for his cherries, he has tried putting ribbons of tape all over the tree-doesnt work. Tried netting it, but its so big it doesnt work..Oh dear. Good luck trying to keep them away!
I am going to try all these plum recipes...I have enough! It seems my trees this year decided to produce about double the amount of plums to last year but half the size?? Weird.

I grow rhubarb, have gooseberry and raspberry bushes I have never managed to get anything from, and can't grow any fruit trees because it is so windy where we are (right by the sea) that even the leaves struggle to stay on!!! We do have an abundance of wild blackberries that grow by us though. Rhubarb and plum jam sounds good... x
