Hi foreverfarm,
I wouldn't tend to incubate the first they lsy asthey may not be fertile I usually give them a few weeks of laying before I would start to incubate just to make sure they are fertile.
Once you decide to incubate the eggs, you can collect them and store them for up to 7 days before incubating although the sooner you incubate the better. The eggs should be stored at an angle with the pointed end down and turned 3 or 4 times a day. http://farmingfriends.com/storing-quail-eggs-for-incubation/

I was wondering when the quail lay their first eggs is it ok to incubate the first ones. If so how long after they lay do i have before I can put them in the incubator.

What I tend to do when the outdoor quail pens get muddy is dig up layers of grass from other not used parts of the garden and simply lay it over the mud to give them something clean to walk on. When that turns to mud just get a spade and shovel it out and put more grass in. It might sound like hard work but it only takes half hour as I dont always cover the complete pen. They love the new grass and start digging for all the crawly things attached to it.

Rubber Mulch is worth looking into it is non toxic and lasts twice as long as bark chip which you could also use. I imagine it would need hosing down to clean it up occassionally but then everything does except for disposable bedding.
Try Googling it to see what comes up. Let us know what you find I may think of it myself if it is any good.

Hi,

I have a big walk in cage for my 12 quails. They love it in there. But during the recent wet weather the floor (concreate slabs) gets horrible. We normally put hay down but its just getting soaked.

I was thinking of using gravel or something that any water can at least drain through?

Hi All,

Nikki is having problems with her eggs hatching.

"We ordered 25 eggs. We set them in egg crates and turned them by hand everyday inside a brooder. The temp set at 99.5 and humidity set at 55. We had one hatch on day 27. Then on day 28 decided to open 2 eggs n pulled out half due to clear eggs when held to a flash light. The 2 we opened had fully formed chukars but the yolk sac was present hanging out of abdominal area. Do we wait longer or is it a lost cause? Any advise on what we did wrong. Please help. Thanks Nikki"

how lovely and for what ever reason they are suddenly all doing this isn't nature wonderful, they are clearly happy birds and will probably do a better job of raising their chicks than humans can
aww shame about the roosters its strange how in any hatch there's normally more males than females, there must be a reason for this

I dont know what has sparked this behavour but so many of my jap quail hens are brooding their own eggs this year. I have had this happen befor but not on this scale. I currently have 2 hens with their own chicks 1 and 2 weeks old and now have another 3 hens who are sitting on a clutch of eggs all in their own pens, its very rare for quail to do this but ive always said they can do it. my quail are kept in large outdoor pens with natural long grass and hiding places but I am still amazed by how keen they are to raise their own. Just thought i would share this with you all.
PS; Chicken chicks are now 6 weeks old, 4 roosters and 1 hen!

Hi, Majd.I breed quail and sell them. My advice is to buy quail that are sexed by feathers, the common brown quail where the male has a bronze chest and the female has a speckled chest is one breed the other is the Italian quail where again the males chest is spotless while the hens is speckled.
Look to buy off heat chicks, they will be about 4 weeks old and will start to lay at around 7 weeks. dont worry about the birds being chicks as the chicks, as well as adult birds, take about 3 weeks to settle into a new home before they will lay an egg. By the time they are use to their new surroundings they will be ready to lay and you will know that you have young birds. Buy atleast 2 hens per 1 male but 3 hens is the norm per 1 male. Avoid buying a male from the same breeder if the male is the same age as he will be a brother to the girls and you will have problems with your chicks if you intend to hatch out the eggs. If you just want your eggs to eat then note that you do not need a male. Pet shops buy a bulk lot of birds from a breeder and sell as breeding pairs, I recommended you avoid this kind of seller.
hope this helps
Rob

I have tried several times this year and the chicks either do not develope all the way or the developed chicks die and do not make it out of the egg? The interesting thing is the Bob White eggs are hatching fine in the same incubator?

Hi, bertie. Hope you find a home for your 3 male quail I would take them but i live in cornwall which is to far away from everything. not many people want male quail and keeping three males together will cause fights. If you cannot rehome them it would be best to release them in to the wild. Quail can live in the english countryside without a problem. If all else fails take them to a wooded-grassy area and let them flourish.
Cheers

I have 3 Japanese male quail birds, approx 12 weeks old that I am trying to find a nice home for. When i bought them I was hoping they were female, but not to be. I don't want to breed quail so have no need for them. They are lovely little birds that would love their own group of ladies or a nice avery to peck around in like hoovers. It would be super if someone was willing to swap them even for a couple of female quail - perhaps Japanese or the something else. They are free and collection only. We are based near Tetbury, Gloucestershire. Hope someone can give them a super little home.
