this happens when the egg sac comes away too quickly before the yolk has been absorbed into the chick or duckling on hatching. This can happen if you assist in removing some shell before it is ready, but siblings can also cause it. It should absorb on its own within 1-3 days.

I tend to leave the chicks in the incubator for 24 hours, their chirping seems to encourage the others to hatch. i am expecting you to get atleast 6 or 7 out of the 12 eggs so dont panic and let nature take its course. if you must move the chicks out do it very quickly as this is a very important incubation time.

Hi H16,

I tend to leave eggs in the incubator for a week to 10 days after the due date as many things can affect the hatching date and make them hatch late.
If this is the only chick you get I would conside buying some day olds in to keep it company.
Fingers crossed for the other eggs.

Hi,

I'm new to hatching and my first attempt (only had 4 eggs as the rest broke in transit) well they never hatched after 23 days I opened them up to find one smelly one that looked like it stopped developing after a few days and 3 fully formed chicks that for some reason never made it out??
This is my second lot of eggs (12) kept temp as close to 100f as can, turned 3 times a day today its day 17 and at 3pm (6.5 hours ago) one hatched. It is drying well and chirping all the time and running round and looking really well. The other 11 eggs aren't moving, no pips no sign that anything is going on?? Should they be hatching now with the fact over 6 hours ago I got a chick? How long is best to leave it and what happens when I remove chick should i add more water for humidty to the others left? I thought atleast another one would of come out by now. What happens if this is the only quail that hatches? Won't it be very lonely and stressed?

Thanks in advance x

Hi Jam,
I have hatched japanese quail and they usually hatch around 17 or 18 days but sometimes the hatch can be delayed so I would wait. Can you see any signs of pipping or any movement or can you hear any chirping. you could try chirping at the incubator to see if you get a response. I have read that japanese quail will synchrise their hatch by chirping to each other in ther shells, not sure if theis is the case but I have seen lots hatch all at once which is great to see.
Good luck with your hatch I would certainly keep the incubator going for up to a week incase the hatch is late.
kind regards

Opening the incubator to turn the eggs is fine even though you loose a bit of heat. what you must not do is overheat the eggs. You can loose heat for a few hours but over heat them for a short time and you will loose the chicks.

I have a an incubator with duck eggs, and then i have a incubator with 1 chicken egg. My brother was at a friends farm, and there was 2 eggs on the ground where the chickens were roaming.she said to take them. i put them in the incubator and 1 of them was fertile. i waited the 21 days, turning, and not turning 3 days before, with humidity...etc. "He" grew and filled the egg. and then i waited...nothing. My question is how long do i wait to see if "he "is late? may 1st was 21 days.he is now 3 days late. there is no smell. i don't want to throw him out and him still be alive. I had to open the incubator to turn eggs or to grab one to candle. That would slow him down right? i was really looking forward to a surprise breed of chicken. Its kind of disappointing. i REALLLY want him to hatch. i have been watching the egg alot lately waiting for movement, my family is joking with me saying he doesn't like me watching....when i stop he will come out.... so how long is too long to wait?
