Hi Jam,
I have hatched japanese quail and they usually hatch around 17 or 18 days but sometimes the hatch can be delayed so I would wait. Can you see any signs of pipping or any movement or can you hear any chirping. you could try chirping at the incubator to see if you get a response. I have read that japanese quail will synchrise their hatch by chirping to each other in ther shells, not sure if theis is the case but I have seen lots hatch all at once which is great to see.
Good luck with your hatch I would certainly keep the incubator going for up to a week incase the hatch is late.
kind regards

Sara`s answer is good advice. Also I keep quail hens in groups of 5 to 2 males but i dont get five eggs evey day sometimes it may be only 2 eggs laid depending on the weather. All my quail eggs are collected for incubation as I sell mature birds rather than the eggs therefore I sometimes leave the eggs in the pens for about a week before collecting them, One thing I have noticed is that by leaving the eggs there it encourages the hens to lay more frequently, when I remove the eggs laying drops off for a few days.

Hi McCann12,
I found that the temperature would affect lay and a change in routine could affect it.
To check for signs of illness look at colour of droppings and consistency. Also their demeanour, if they are particularly fluffed up with heads into themselves and abit wobbly this can be a sign of illness.
Hope theywill start laying regularly for you. Quail are such lovely little birds.
Enjoy.
kind regards

Hello,

I am the proud new owner of four brown and white quails! The first day i got them i had 5 eggs, the next 4 eggs and for the past few weeks i get 3 eggs a day. Without seperating them all is there any way to find out if one isn't laying? I'm new to quails and don't want one of them to be ill or something and thats why shes not laying. I did think that maybe it's a different one each day that isnt laying but not sure how likely that is. Or perhaps the bad weather has caused this.

Any advice would be very appreciated!
Thanks! :)

Hi Duskhunter

My ducks moulted last winter, and it seemed to last for months! They will be 2 this year. I don't give my ducks or hens water at night time. They are locked away in their little with no access to either food or water and are fine with that.

Hope you get answers to your other queries!

I am new to lady ducks and the egg laying bounty. Can anyone tell me more about when they moult and how long egg laying is interrupted for? Also at what age do they stop laying? and as I am expecting new babies soon and may have to re-home some at what age are they no longer good to eat? I would rather keep them till they are past that age to be sure that will not be their fate.

Also, as the ducks make such a mess with water at night is it okay to leave them without any till morning or should I get a special water drinker? I have a feeling unless it is really heavy they will tip it over as they do everything else. All our animals have access to water at all times it would seem it could cause health problems for them if deprived for any length of time.

What age have member's ducks lived till and have they had to have any special nurturing as they have aged?

evening all...

Well, my little duck seemed fine this morning but again it was windy and drizzly so I left her where she was (with access to outside space).

She has spent a lot of time inside aswell as having the odd wander about outside. She doesn't seem to be eating much, but isn't weak on her legs anymore. No eggs have been laid since I moved her, but that is only to be expected I suppose.

Tonight she was quacking away so I put her back with her buddies. She seemed delighted and kept up with them and did some foraging before I locked them away. I will clean out their pool etc again tomorrow and put warm water in and hope this will all help her make a full recovery.

fingers crossed!!!

Hello all!

Well, hubby went and checked on my poorly duck this morning and she was quacking away - as she hadn't seen him for two months I know how she feels!

The weather still wasn't great so we kept her confined but opened up the 'hatch' that gave her access to a small outside area. She did some foraging but also spent a lot of time inside the shed too.

I am keeping her separate tonight too and hope for a warmer day tomorrow so I can put her back with her buddies.. I will then see how she gets on.

So sorry for delay in update - it was a bit manic this morning!

Let the ducks out for breakfast, and the poorly girl seemed a bit perkier. she came out last but had a bit of a forage before sitting down and resting. she then got up and just seemed a bit slower than the others but fine, if you know what I mean.

Got back a while ago and she was sitting at the far edge of the duck compound facing away (the chickens do that when they really aren't well, so it always worries me). The others came quacking towards me for food but she stayed still.

I have now made the broody hen shed a sick bay and placed her in there with lots of bedding and food/water. the weather is rotten today so I think that is the best plan. It will also still be warmer than in the garage.

Fingers crossed this helps. Will boil some eggs for her later and put some crushed baked egg shells in there too - a trick I always used to do with the chickens but had completely forgotten about!

will keep you updated x

hope all is well this morning Karen,
been thinking of your duck and wondering if you saw her in the state she was in the morning then slightly better after the school run could the egg be in the pool or under a bush somewhere,
I have read lots of times on here about adding oystershell to strengthen egg shells in ducks and Sarahs idea ive read before on garden birds sites and have tried them uncooked with my garden birds in spring as the female needs alot of extra calcium for her egg marathon but they didnt touch them, but their food should be enough to keep things normal and has been until now, I think they should be fine once back in a natural rythem after the moult but I like to suppliment with spinnach and it seems to work for my girls and is a tasty treat for them to x

Hi Karen, sorry to hear about your girl. Grit for chickens is to grind up their food and is not for extra calcium. Pop some used egg shells in the oven and bake, or just crush them finely in a blender and mix this in with their food over the next few days to see if this helps.
Mine absolutely love a warm bath, not a lukewarm one and as always, I opt for swimming, drinking and then more swimming fresh water.
Lets hope she is recovered in the morning.
Sarah
