Hi jO

I have had this with hatching a couple of times and have found the best thing is to leave it in the incubator and it will dry out the attached bit and the chick will free itself in time you could try giving it a bit of cooled boiled sugar water just to give it a bit of energy, hope this helps and good luck.

regards

I have followed this post out of pure interest as ive never incubated but there seems to be confusion about vent plugs from two members who have, so I did some reading up about them, this link says the vent front plugs should be removed, not sure what your model and instructions say though, this is the paragraph from the link below
Plastic Vent Plugs
The front vent plug (just below label) is used to regulate humidity and the back vent plug (by electric cord) is used when there is excessive humidity, as follows:

When incubator is over 75 percent of capacity, remove the front vent plug one week before hatch date. The day that chicks start to hatch, remove the back vent plug. If incubator is over 90 percent of capacity and contains large chicks, it may be necessary to prop one side of the incubator top up about 1/8 inch to get chicks dry. Leave side propped up just long enough for most of moisture to clear on windows, but no longer than one hour at a time.

When incubator is from 25 to 75 percent of capacity, remove the front vent plug the day chicks start to hatch.

When there is moisture condensed on the windows, remove front vent plug.

Be sure to replace vent plugs before next setting of eggs.

If vent plug should be lost, close the vent hole with scotch tape.

Chicks may be removed 24 hours after they start to hatch. Extremely wet chicks should be left in incubator to dry.

Plan to remove chicks once a day, as every time incubator is opened, warm moist air escapes. Avoid chilling of wet chicks.

Some chicks may be late in hatching, so you can leave remaining unhatched eggs up to two days longer.

http://urbanext.illinois.edu/eggs/res19-opincubator.html

He could have stayed in the incubator for 24 hours and his chirping would encourage the others to hatch. i dont know what you mean by vent plugs so maybe you had to remove him for that reason

the eggs are all moving, so all alive, they will hatch all in the next couple of days. But one started last night, if he gets out before the rest, i can't open the vent plugs the dry him....or ?

And at this point , in the next couple of days if i have to to get the humidity up a bit more, can i lift it a little just enought o get water in the bottom? if i have to.

I was wondering if anyone has Pekin Bantams, I was thinking of getting some hatching eggs, then keeping a breeding pair and then selling the babies. I like the black mottled colouring. Does anyone else have any of these little guys? I have found a supplier for hatching eggs but I would prefer to get them from you guys.
Oh btw they arnt going to be in with the ducks, they will be in their own little arc in the garden. Campbell would probably eat them-grumpy boy.

Hi Queenchick, good news on your two chicks, they can stay in the incubator for 24hrs as as you have said they have the yolk sack to maintain them, then move them to a brooder with a heat lamp chick food and water, as for the other that can take up to 3 days to hatch but i would keep a eye on them, they mey need some help!, if they have broken any of the shell the membrame may become dry and dry on the chick, i would take a look at them , and with some cool boiled water and a cotton bud just soften the membrame, you could add some sugar to the water an if you can just drip it on the beak this will give them a bit of a boost, if you do need to step in then just brake off some of the shell, but take care not to brake the inside membrame as this contains blood vessals, carefully take the shell off and just fold the inner sack back, start whr they have pipped going roud the top of the egg, then put the chick back n the incubator and leave the chick to get out of the shell as it might still be attached to the shell, this is whr you could make the chick bleed,
good luck keep us updated

Update: two chicks have completed the 'hatching stage', both this afternoon. There are at least 4 more that are pipping. I am not taking the lid off so as not to let out any of the warmth. I'm going to leave these in the incubator until tomorrow at which time I'll move them. I've read they can stay UP to 2-3 days in the incubator as the yolk sak will maintain them. 'Funny' thing is....the two that have hatched are NOT two of the first to 'pip'. I have noticed the others to move....they move a bit and then rest a bit. Just hoping they don't 'need' help.

We incubated 22 eggs from our chickens and 8 bantam eggs from another source. Our 11 year old noticed the first egg pipping this morning at 7am, by 3pm 3 were pipping and by 5pm I noticed another 2, five in all. Is it 'normal' for the first to not be hatched yet? How long is 'normal'from beginning of pipping to full hatch? Any advice?

Hi, I agree with Sara that it is more likely to be the male but equally it could be Mum if she thinks they are weak. My advice would be to remove the drake and put the ducklings back with Mum and observe her, She should sit gently on top of them, til all the eggs have hatched. If she chucks them out again you will have to keep them incubated until you see what happens with the rest of them. If she takes care of the others, she will probably have the others back.
Keep in touch and if you need any more help, just ask.

Hi All,
Wilhelmine has emailed that her newly hatching eggs are being turfed out of the nest,

Hi, wondered if you could help. Have a nest of muskovy eggs. Today started to hatch out. One by one part open egg was out of the nest on the barn floor, duckling cold but alive. I have put two under a lamp and seperated the male as he may have pulled them out! Will the rest be turfed out or now he is away will things calm down? Have another nest but not due for at least two weeks. Would be grateful of any advice. Thanks Wilhelmine

My advice was:

You have done the right thing to get them warmed up under a heat lamp. Yes it could definately have been the male so good idea to separate him. It could have been the mother that turfed them out if she thinks there is something wrong but it could have been the male.

Thanks for any advice,
kind regards
Sara
