It does sound as though this has been sorted Ani. As long as he is interested in you large duck and is leaving the smaller ones you don't need to worry. Your big duck may get a bald neck if he is too passionate with her but unelss it is very sore it is not a massive problem we have often joked about making them scarves as protection agains the amorous advances of the boys!
They are funny they do not like being apart but suffer when they are together!

sorry, havent been on for a while :) we have sorted the problem (mostly.) do ducks tend to 'mate for life' like swans or something as our drake is obsessed with our other bigger duck. he chases after us and he puffs himslf up if we go near her. the 3 smaller ones are separated, one on eggs and i will have the other 2 together soon as one was recovering from a bad eye ( which is now completely healed!) but I fear that if i did separate the drake and female he is with now, it will affect both of them. They are happy waddling about in the garden during the day and they sleep in the same house. I'm hoping we have sorted this out now, and hopefully we will have some new additions in a few weeks!

thank you all so much for putting up with me!

ani this has all been a shock for you and fully understand your upset, ok you are only 14 im 55 and still gets frustrated trying to keep them all happy and safe, they are clearly your pets but you are still a child you need help from your parents to try and sort this problem, you say you need drastic help we can only tell you what we do they need to sort this for you

your drake is the issue, I see no point in getting rid of the girls you have and getting more, im not sure where you home your ducks but for now I suggest he is put on his own to give you time to think what to do, this can't carry on like this one dead duck is enough :(
I've just looked back and seen you had the same problem last year, what did you do then ?

Hi Ani,
If you don't separate your drake from the gils he will just carry on doing damage. The small ducks will be most prone to it and it is not only heartbreaking it is not fair on the girls. It is his natural instinct of course but I had a drake drown two girls in breeding season so I separate them now unless I want to hatch eggs and even then I separate them after a while as the drakes can be just so heavy footed/beaked whatever the girls are entitled to live without injury from him. My girls go and sit the other side of the wire netting to keep the drakes company and then they are let back together around the end of October till about the end of Feb when it all starts again.

well now i have a small duck with a bloody face as he has got hold of her :( i am afraid that if i dont get any drastic help i will have to re-home him... I have spent the last 3 hours crying as i have had such a bad weekend with my ducks (would just like to say i am only 14, so this is very hard as i am very attached to my pets) and I am devastated. I have now got a duck who is badly injured and very scared. I have attempted to clean her eye but she was so stressed i left her to calm down in a clean cage. She has water and i gave her some grass as she loves it. I am torn between keeping the girls or starting again with some new girlies... please help me as i am so upset words cant describe it... :'( xxxx many thankssss xxxxxx

oh how I wish we could castrate drakes, I have 2 and once more mayhem has broken out as both boys want to claim each girl we havnt had injuries but eye damage is my biggest fear, last summer I kept both drakes happy together away from the girls but that would be so unfair for a single drake, im not sure it would be fare to pass him on to someone else though, is he a bigger breed drake than your girls ? would he be better with a bigger girl kept as a pair maybe away from your smaller ducks

Hi Ani, So sorry to hear this. I suppose the drake could have been over zealous and it could have been too much for her. I am notsure what to suggest. I suppose you could separate the other injured ducks from him until they are better. Is he like this all year round or just as the breeding season gets under way?
Hope he calms down.

hi guys, haven't posted in a while!

any way, i have some very bad news. One of my female ducks was killed this morning, and i was very upset at the fact i was the one to find her whilst attempting to move some chickens. We aren't sure how she died, as there was no bite marks ruling out cat or fox. What i do know is our drake is very heavy handed and caused this duck to go blind in one eye. Do you think he might have killed her? He has also done damage to 2 of my new Call/Campbell females. one of them has some serious damage to her eye. it is red raw and all her feathers around her eye are gone. Her eyelid is pretty much destroyed and she has a small hole that she can see through. Luckily, her eye is fine underneath. She is sitting on some eggs at the moment, so she is in a separate house in the pen. I would like to know if there is ANYTHING i can do to stop this drake as this is really a LAST resort before i have to get rid of him, so please IF YOU HAVE ANY HELP OR TIPS FOR ME, REPLY AS I REALLY DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO LOOSE HIM TOO. thank you every one...

I cannot get the pictures to open. It does sound like this is pecking and once there is a different colour on a bird they will keep pecking. Make sure they have plenty of other more interesting things to peck at instead. veggies etc

Hello, we have five mallard eggs that we rescued after my horses scared mom off the nest. Amazingly 4 have made. We found/rescued them on the 30th of June and could already see that they were fertilized and some movement. So I am guessing they are at least 20 plus days already. My question is this three of the eggs have growing air sacs. One of them only now has air bubbles, but is still moving, and has good veins. Has almost filled the egg to. No noise yet though. Is there anything I can do to help this little one? Have used the stethoscope and it sounds the same as the others. It is the most filled egg of all of them. I hope this makes sense, as this is the first time I have done anything like this.

Thank you Sara, she seems to be doing ok so far, she's eating and I put a sand bath in for her last night, I am hoping she can rub some of the dried blood off that way. I was worried that if I seperated them for any length of time she would just give up, but I don't think it's a problem :)

Hi ferityelf,
I have only just read this and yes would definately suggest keeping them separate as birds tend to bully injured other birds and the others will start pecking at the blood.
Hope your injured female recovers soon with no permanent damage.

Thank you for your reply, I have also had a response from a Quail farm in Wales, I thought anyone reading this may be interested, he suggested keeping them seperate until she is fully recovered and then introduce them back together in a strange environment to them all, but he has warned that once they pick on one they could take it to the end.

Dear ferityelf,
I know nothing of quail but can you get wound powder in France? I don't know what it would be called there but it's available here from any farm store or equestrian store. I would keep her separate from the other two.
A runner I had was attacked by a crow who took an eye out, it was a mess but wound powder and being kept separate the eye did eventualy heal over and the runner was fine.
I'm sure someone here will be able to help you better than I can, but I would use some antiseptic on the wound.
I hope all goes well.

I am looking after 3 quail, 2 female, one male. The male has badly injured one female, I think she may have lost an eye but there is lots of blood on the back of her head, I have left it to dry, no flies around and no point in wetting what is healing, I think??. I have seperated the three to allow the injured female to rest and not be bullied by the other female, tomorrow will be the second day, what do I do now? do I let the other female in to her, when should I let the male back in. I am in France, we have just got over a really cold winter and spring is springing. Not bothered about eggs just that they all survive. Please help, I don't know anything about looking after these little things.

Hi Julia,
I am sorry to hear this about the quail, sometimes you get a bird that can be very agressive, if he is trying to mate with her she may not like it and be letting him know, although you would think that it was instinct to mate. Has the male got anything the matter with him, if so the female may be picking on him because of this and trying to establish herself higher in the pecking order. Is it possible to get some more females which may distract the female and also the males attention away from her.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.
Let us know how you get on.

I had a male Japanese Quail living in a giant rabbit cage all alone after his partner got out. I then brought a new female Japanese quail as a mate for him. But every time he even walks past her or even far away she with peak, attack, bite and rip his feathers out for no reason, she now owns the outside area while he stays hidden inside the den, she is very tame (same with him) but this has to stop as he is being harmed, any advice or ideas? Thank you :)

Hi Crazy chick,

So Sorry to hear you lost your duck, that is always difficult and very sad. I do know as I have lost ones.

I do hope that all your others will be fine, getting a PM done even with another Vet would give you peace of mind.

Take care
Regards
Lorna

Hi Crazychick

So sorry to hear about your duck - this is the first chance I've had to log on since this morning so have just read all the posts. I agree with Mo that a PM is a good idea. If you discover she was egg bound then you can at least know you did all you can, and if it is something else then you can hopefully protect the rest of your gang from it.
Good luck with the segregation this weekend!

ahh really dont think its anything to do with mites this duck really sounded egg bound to me, dont like to judge as im no expert but im not convinced it is right having such a variety of animals living so closely together though maybe Sara as a farmer will advice on that x maybe a second shed for the rabitts and guinies would be an idea
