Opening the incubator to turn the eggs is fine even though you loose a bit of heat. what you must not do is overheat the eggs. You can loose heat for a few hours but over heat them for a short time and you will loose the chicks.

Hi Pastrychef,
Can you get an auto turner for your incubator, I have one so it's one less thing to think about and you don't have to open the incubator.
Hope the duck eggs hatch soon.

duck eggs are late too... so it must have been me, but if you have to turn them....its hard to do without having to open the incubator to do that, and then the temp goes down. not majorly but still.
next batch of duck eggs is gonna be a quick open and turn!

I have a an incubator with duck eggs, and then i have a incubator with 1 chicken egg. My brother was at a friends farm, and there was 2 eggs on the ground where the chickens were roaming.she said to take them. i put them in the incubator and 1 of them was fertile. i waited the 21 days, turning, and not turning 3 days before, with humidity...etc. "He" grew and filled the egg. and then i waited...nothing. My question is how long do i wait to see if "he "is late? may 1st was 21 days.he is now 3 days late. there is no smell. i don't want to throw him out and him still be alive. I had to open the incubator to turn eggs or to grab one to candle. That would slow him down right? i was really looking forward to a surprise breed of chicken. Its kind of disappointing. i REALLLY want him to hatch. i have been watching the egg alot lately waiting for movement, my family is joking with me saying he doesn't like me watching....when i stop he will come out.... so how long is too long to wait?

So, I think finally one of my duckling eggs has started to develop!! I think I can see the thinnest tiniest of veins when I candle it, (I started incubating them on Monday 2nd) however the rest dont look like theyre fertile. I guess its early on but do you think theres a chance one of my eggs is developing? Its just all the photos online are so clear I cant work out if people only upload good ones or if im just looking so hard that im imagining things... I want a hatch so badly!!

By day 10 there should be blood vessels right across the yolk, which should be visible with a strong torch, if they are fertile. Since this is their 1st year the first eggs may not take, I'm sure if you keep trying that you will have success.

Thats the thing, the dot is relatively large like in this picture http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_LFNgdD3Z4jk/TCoPeyOiVmI/AAAAAAAAB3I/2LdZXvHEuts/s1600/FertileEggPIx.jpg , which implies to me that they ARE fertile. The ducks mate enough to make me think that the eggs should be fertile as well. I dont know what else I can do, do others have as poor a success rate as me? Should I just keep trying?

Thanks!

I think perhaps they are not fertile. ALL yolks have a white dot on them and only when they are fertilised are they a fair bit larger dot.
Have a look at incubation charts to be sure you have the right settings for turning the eggs and humidity. http://farmingfriends.com/humidity-levels-for-egg-incubation/

If and when you do manage to brood some ducklings, they will not be accepted into the group you already have until they are quite mature themselves.

Hi,

Last spring we got 3 indian runner ducklings- 2male, 1female, who are now all grown up and the female is laying plenty of eggs!
The idea of hatching our own eggs was exciting and so I borrowed an incubator from a friend and got to work, following a lot of research! Anyway, so at about day 10 I candled my eggs and not a single one had started to develop. Thinking that perhaps all 14 could be infertile, I got rid of them and started again. This time I tried with six, however cracked some more before putting this six in to see if they were fertile- of which they were; they had the bullseye on the yolk. The six, at day 12 currently, have shown no signs of development at all but I am so reluctant to chuck them that I have left them (to see what you all say!) And I have started on another 10 today! Please help me, I cant believe that every single egg Ive tried has failed- I am monitoring the temperature and turning the eggs- the only thing I cant monitor is humidity however I have filled up the well with water, but I am pulling my hair out trying to work out where Im going wrong! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thankyou!

the egg tooth is for them to pip their own shell. It sounds like your incubator settings haven't been quite right and they are not as advanced as you thought they were. Make sure the settings are correct, temps and humidity and give it another couple of days. I presume the one you tried to "help" has now died? or is it still in the incubator?

Hi All,
Joe has emailed about his indian runner hatch.

"I am trying to incubate Indian runner eggs and today is day 30. I have been told differing opinions on what to do if the eggs are not hatching. I just removed the shell from one egg and the chick seemed to be moving but not fully developed. What happened. It had some feathers and I saw an egg tooth. Did I screw up. I feel terrible. Joe."

It sound like not enough humidity. Are you opening the vent plugs in top of the hova bator at hatch to allow more oxygen? I have the Hova bator also and am hatching ducks. My hardest part is the humidity as it always wants to stay around 65% or less and I need mine at 80% when they are pipping. I wet down a rag and put it in there on the side to raise mine. I'm no expert and just started so I would certainly defer to Sara or others if they say something different from me.
