Hi Mo,
I think you are right, some of the guinea fowl and ducks I hatched have gone broody and some haven't, same with the hens I have some are more prone to going broody and sitting than others!
Thanks for your thoughts.
Kind regards

i'd have thought it was instinct and nothing to do with where they hatched surely, some will sit some won't and while you can encorage where to lay not sure you can force a bird to be broody x

Hi All,

Alice has asked about getting an incubator hatched hen to sit on a nest.

"Is it possible to get a hen hatched from an incubator to sit a nest? I have been told that they will not sit a nest. If they can how do I go about getting them started and if not do you have any information on a website that sells chicks that are hatched by a sitting hen? Alice"

My advice for getting a hen to sit is to put some pot eggs in a safe and sheltered nest or area where the hen likes to go, the pot eggs will encourage her to sit and lay eggs in this nest. Plenty of fresh, clean, dry straw in the nest area seems to encourage my hens to lay as well.

Thanks for any advice.

kind regards

ahh Debbie, think very carefully yes you paid £15 for half a dozen eggs, add the cost of buying an incubator, Sara sells one about £60, then a months electric, then heating in a brooder when they hatch then all the food then the billion dollar question if they all hatch and survive what are you going to do with 8 more ducklings
you have followed your heart but time to follow your head, me I think I would have the best Sunday omlete I'd ever had xx

why not put these in the incubator now you have them and as Mo says let her try and get back with her flock. If she does go broody again you can then put the eggs from the incubator under her. Make sure you mark them with the date you set them.

Debbie, I know the sound you mean it's very distressing to see them like this, my candy still does it and yes she has had a couple of mornings where she hasn't wanted to come of her egg but she has had to because ducklings here arn't an option at the moment
this sound and huntched up behaviour is not all to do with being broody, I watch my ducks constantly as i'm at home all day and can say without doubt it is a stress sound, in Candys case it is caused either by treacle getting to close when he was allowed to or every single time a wood pigeon comes into the garden, she does have a grumble at me when I make her get out of the shed but at no other time is it directed at me,
you have to do what you think is best but personally I feel as Sarah said that she has sat for long enough and to now have to sit for another month may do her more harm than good, sometimes we have to be cruel to be kind with our ducks

it seems nothing is going to happen now :( seems that all the eggs have gone bad. We have noticed that she has'nt been swimming much recently, so wonder if eggs got too hot. She does'nt want to leave her nest, and i think it would really upset her if we took it away. We have ordered some more eggs from the internet so she can get it out of her system, we can't put up with her being so loud. Here is where we got the eggs from : http://www.poplarfarmcottage.com/index.html

Very friendly service, next day delivery, you can phone them up with questions & really well packed. We ordered 6 eggs & they sent us 8! :)

Hi Debbie, the white one is definitely bad and also the one on the right. I would discard these two. You will smell they are not right then you can smell the others to compare. The eggs should be very warm, like holding an animal, with no cool spots. At this stage the ducklings will be tapping inside and should squeak back to you if you squeak to them. I must say though that it doesn't look good.
She has been sitting long enough now, that if you could source some tiny ducklings and pop them in under her when it's dusk, she may accept them, like another person on here did recently. If you do this, leave a couple of eggs in there with them then remove them when Jemima has accepted her new babies.
The alternative is to let her realise they are not going to hatch then clear everything away once she has vacated the nest.

I don't know the answer but they look a little dark, mine have been in incubator for ages now we stop turning on friday, and all my eggs are still whiteish colour

can you smell yours and see if they smell? I have seen a few posts on the net about the water trick to see if any bobbing or if any are bad but I have not done it and I have also seen posts saying not to do it so I am not sure with that one :)
