Hi Laura,
So pleased to hear you have the chance to move to the cottage with more land, that's great news.
Pig wise you will need to phone your local animal health department at the council up and get a holding number. All pig owners need a holding number. I think this is free but it was a few years ago that I got mine.
When pigs move onto your land or off your land you will need a movement license - You will need a movement license form each time a pig leaves your premises or you bring a pig onto your premises.

You can obtain these forms from your local animal health officer at your county hall offices. When completing the form upon movement of a pig or piglets from your premises, one copy is given to the person moving the pigs/piglets, one copy is kept by yourself and another copy is sent to your local animal health officer at county hall.

You must keep a record of animal movement with the following information included:

    Your name and address.
Date of movement.
The Herd Number / Identification Number or Temporary Mark on Pigs.
The number of pigs being moved.
The Holding Number and Address From Which Pigs Have Moved From.
The Holding Number and Address To Which Pigs Are Moved To.

Hope this info is useful.

I kept 2 saddlebacks (called Cagney and Lacy) and then raised piglets which we sold on as weaners to other smallholders or sold them for meat. The Saddleback is a lovely pig, great outdoors, very maternal, has a good nature. I just loved keeping pigs and hope to again in the future.

Good luck with the move and the new venture into pigs, enjoy!
Best Wishes

Awww thanks Karen! I love the idea you bought him a book, maybe next birthday, buy him a pig arc, then the one after that, a bag of pig food. Then eventually! Some pigs! Haha. What a wonderful present, I may suggest a book on how to rear pigs for my birthday, xxx

I have to butt in and say you are very lucky! We would love pigs, but hubby is away too much for us to even look into it properly (although I did buy him a 'how to rear pigs and what to look for' book for his Birthday!).

One thing I do know is that yes, you have to register. No idea about anything else but just wanted to wish you all the luck you need!

Hello!
Sara, this is one for you really. As some of you know, we are moving house. I managed to get some land from my father in law to build my chook empire, well now, the cottage on his farm is free, so we are going to move into there, with lots of land (yippiiiiii!!!!) So! We have discussed and we have bucket loads of space so we would ideally like to keep some pigs.
I have never kept pigs before. I have read somewhere about licenses and things, we will be eating them ourselves and not selling a scrap to anyone else. (yum!) So do we need to register with Defra?
What does this entail? Is it a form I fill in and send off and thats it?
Do I pay each year?
Does someone have to visit me to make sure they are happy piggies?
Or do we not have to do it at all?
We were thinking of getting 3 pigs, and fattening them up to eat. 1st one we kill will be a pork pig, 2nd a cutter and 3rd a bacon pig and I will make our own bacon!!
Not thinking about breeding just yet. (Though once we have more experience I think breeding would be very interesting!)
We were thinking of either pure Gloucester Old Spots, or a cross with something else. (We live in Gloucestershire so it would be rude not to have them)
Thanks for your help!!! xx

lovely to read about piglets doing well, must confess to being a little jealous. Sadly Flora was in pig but lost them all at some point, had to call out the vet who suspected that they had mumified inside, apparantly common in sheep. Flora seems none the worse, a course of antibiotics and she is happy in herself, although she has not yet come back in to season. I am thinking about getting a couple of weaners to fatten and to keep her company while she sorts herself out. Maybe the company would help bring her on? I have the option of taking her back to the boar but I think I would prefer to try AI as I not sure she dealt with the boar very well and seemed to get a bit stressed. Any suggestions?
Well congratualtions to Petunia and Turtledove thrilled for you both!

Hi turtledove,
congrats on the piglets, make sure the straw on the ground stays flat so that the piglets don't roll down the straw next to mum as she may roll on them by accident. If the straw is too deep the piglets can't seem to move away quickly.

Give them soem grass and soil which is good for iron intake.

Give them water.

Not sure about the afterbirth, don't remember what I did, which means don't remember seeing it or having to do anything with it, hmmm?!

Have you got a heat lamp hung abit away from mum so the piglets can move away to the heat and then they won't be so tempted to lay too close to mum.

Good luck and let us know how theya re getting on.

I will be down on my knees tomarrow..She loves a belly rub.I have had her since she was a week old.I read at the pig site that her vulva amd behind will swell;also that she will secrete a clear liquid prior to milk.Should I be concerned about her rolling over on the babies ????Does anyone have an idea about setting up for the babies;I have a metal rack from a bunk bed that I thought I would try to use????grunt-grunt turtledove

Hi there. I am new.. but I used to raise pigs. At one time, we had 100 sows! If your sow is due in October, you should be able to tell if shes pregnant, by getting on your hands and knees, and looking between her back legs at her udder. IF there is a definite crease, then shes not in pig. If its flat then good chance shes pregnant.

The red swollen vulva thing and discharge isn't a good sign of her being pregnant tho. Good luck!

hi Sara,
no problem in feeling her belly she is a very friendly pig. I have been feeling for any changes and tweeking her teets so she gets used to it before farrowing but as yet have felt no movement. She had a very strong musty smell today as well. I think we are going to monitor her closely and see happens in three weeks. I don't tink we'll use the boar again just in case she is preganant because we don't want to him to do any damage, but maybe AI?
We are keeping everything crossed, but what will be will be!

hello everybody.
i have a lovely Gloucester Old Spot sow called Flora. She is about 3 years old. She spent six weeks with a boar and until yesturday I thought she was pregnant and due 20th October, but she seems to have come into heat, swollen vulva and a bit of discharge. She had lost quite a bit of weight when she was with the boar but quickly put it back on and I had thought some of this was pregnacy wieght but now I am not so sure. I have heard of some pigs continuing to come into heat through preganacy, is this common? Should I be thinking about returning her to the boar?
Any help and advice is greatfully recieved.

Hi steve,
Thanks for sharing your photo of the kune kune - I love the pic. Ut's great when pigs are able to forage for food and root about in the mud!
I have kept Saddleback pigs which are a great hardy breed and make good mothers and can have a large litter.
Kind regards

Kune Kune pigs are small, very even-tempered and docile; their name means 'fat and round' in Maori! A couple are being reared alongside some Gloucester Old Spots and Saddlebacks to clear the old kitchen garden at Kingston Lacy House, a National trust owned property in Dorset.

I am an artist working on a book of pig breeds - I particularly need good photos to paint from, of Landrace, Welsh, Middle White and Essex - if anyone has any they could email I would be so grateful and they would get an acknowledgement when the book is published next year.
