Hi Laura,
So pleased to hear you have the chance to move to the cottage with more land, that's great news.
Pig wise you will need to phone your local animal health department at the council up and get a holding number. All pig owners need a holding number. I think this is free but it was a few years ago that I got mine.
When pigs move onto your land or off your land you will need a movement license - You will need a movement license form each time a pig leaves your premises or you bring a pig onto your premises.

You can obtain these forms from your local animal health officer at your county hall offices. When completing the form upon movement of a pig or piglets from your premises, one copy is given to the person moving the pigs/piglets, one copy is kept by yourself and another copy is sent to your local animal health officer at county hall.

You must keep a record of animal movement with the following information included:

    Your name and address.
Date of movement.
The Herd Number / Identification Number or Temporary Mark on Pigs.
The number of pigs being moved.
The Holding Number and Address From Which Pigs Have Moved From.
The Holding Number and Address To Which Pigs Are Moved To.

Hope this info is useful.

I kept 2 saddlebacks (called Cagney and Lacy) and then raised piglets which we sold on as weaners to other smallholders or sold them for meat. The Saddleback is a lovely pig, great outdoors, very maternal, has a good nature. I just loved keeping pigs and hope to again in the future.

Good luck with the move and the new venture into pigs, enjoy!
Best Wishes

Hello!
Sara, this is one for you really. As some of you know, we are moving house. I managed to get some land from my father in law to build my chook empire, well now, the cottage on his farm is free, so we are going to move into there, with lots of land (yippiiiiii!!!!) So! We have discussed and we have bucket loads of space so we would ideally like to keep some pigs.
I have never kept pigs before. I have read somewhere about licenses and things, we will be eating them ourselves and not selling a scrap to anyone else. (yum!) So do we need to register with Defra?
What does this entail? Is it a form I fill in and send off and thats it?
Do I pay each year?
Does someone have to visit me to make sure they are happy piggies?
Or do we not have to do it at all?
We were thinking of getting 3 pigs, and fattening them up to eat. 1st one we kill will be a pork pig, 2nd a cutter and 3rd a bacon pig and I will make our own bacon!!
Not thinking about breeding just yet. (Though once we have more experience I think breeding would be very interesting!)
We were thinking of either pure Gloucester Old Spots, or a cross with something else. (We live in Gloucestershire so it would be rude not to have them)
Thanks for your help!!! xx

Hi DBZFan13
Welcome to the forum. How does it compare to Farmville?!
I will start to answer some of your questions & let Sara have a go later!
A gilt is a young female pig, after she has had her first litter of piglets she becomes a sow.

I think cows and pigs are like all animals- they are not hard to raise when everything goes right - but they do need time to give them care and attention. They rely on us for food, shelter & being kept in a stress free environment. This is a good question which others may answer differently.

When a cow or pig gives birth she should do it herself if she is healthy & everything goes right. But she has to be monitored in case problems occurr which may need some assistance.

I don't have any farm animals(exept on farmville) and I'm only 14, but there are a three things I'd like to know, since I might decide I'd like to be a farmer when I grow up: 1: what's the difference between a sow and a gilt? Uh 2: are cows and pigs hard to raise and/or breed? And then there's 3: when a cow or pig gives birth, should I help her or let her have her babies herself? I'd like to know. Sara, please e-mail me when you answer my question, WHEN you answer them, NOT WHAT your answers are please.

Hi All,

For those of you interested in keeping pigs I just wanted to let you know that I have just added The Virgin Pig Keeper book by David Brown to my farmingfriends shop http://farmingfriends.com/shop/livestock-books/the-virgin-pig-keeper-a-pair-of-pigs-in-the-garden-by-david-brown/

I have kept pigs and it is a great experience, I kept Saddleback pigs and they were gentle, friendly, hardy and excellent mothers. For those thinking about keeping pigs and have time and ready for the hard work then it's great fun and very rewarding raising the piglets and keeping the pigs and bonding with them.

Hello from Pennsylvania. I was beyond excited to find this discussion. We are also raising Kune Kune pigs. I have the exact same questions about my gilt Ramona. She has been with a boar through three heat cycles. I think she may be pregnant but am not sure. She is acting melancholy and resting more that usual. I think she may have cycled again but am not sure. It was 29 days from the last day of her last cycle. Is this normal. My older boar did not seem interested in her but my eight month old boar was trying to breed her. She was sort of standing for him but I'm not sure he was tall enough to really accomplish anything.
Should I be concerned about her disposition? I'm beginning to realize that breeding Kunes can be difficult.
Also, I can not find a vet anywhere near me that know anything about pig in general let alone working with breeding pigs.

Hi All,
I am pleased to say that Tammy has been in touch and this is what she said,

"I wanted to thank you for your advice it was very helpful the vet did come out and said that it was what you had said they were mistreated and the piglets died in early pregnancy how ever she passed everything and is still healthy and said she could be put back with the boar which we have decided to wait a month or two before doing that to make sure she is ok and still healthy however I have a few more questions like I said before, my daddy worked on a pig farm but its been years ago and he said he remembers giving sows shots when they put them in the farrowing crates I was wondering if maybe you could help me with what they might be and if you give yours anything and what.
I know you give the piglets iron shots but I would like to know if and what you give the mother before they are born.
Anything you can help me with will be great.
Thanks
Tammy

I am so pleased that Tammy's sow is ok and that she will be able to have more piglets.
I will let you know what info I send to Tammy when I have replied.

Hi Topveg,

Thanks for your input it is much appreciated. I have heard that if sows are too fat it causes problems with farrowing. I know that if our cows are big and have been fed alot then this can result in a large calf and a difficult birth.

Hello again

I have just re-read Stacey's first message - which seems to say that the first 5 piglets arrived OK, but then the next lot died. This could be that the sow was farrowing very slowly - & I wondered if the sow/gilts could have been too fat - being looked after too well? Just a thought

Hi Lyn,
Thanks for your suggestions. I know of the erysephalis symptoms in sows and thought it could make them infertile but didn't realise it could result in stillborns. I will look into the eryparvo and the vit E deficiency and learn more about this. I will pass this on to Tammy.
Kind regards

hi there, the latter of the two emails sounds like it could be erysephalis or eryparvo - unsure how to spell it, or a vitamin E deficiency its all on www.thepigsite.com as mentioned above.
it can be prevented through vaccination before pregnancy and then 6 months routinely. maybe something to look at.

Hi Topveg, thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

I have had another pig keeper whose sow has farrowed and the piglets were not fully formed.

"I am looking for some help my sow had pigs yesterday and none of them looked like baby pigs they had head like pigs but there bodies were watery when I bought she was already with pigs and didnt have long to go before farrowing we got her pen ready and when she had them only one looked like a pig but the rest looked like i descride above can you give me any insight about what might have happen or do you thing she was abuse by the people i got her from she had nine all togather any information would be helpful i would like to no if it was something that happen in moving her before she is ready to put back with the boar thanks for your time and any information will be helpful thanks Tammy"

Here's my response:
It sounds like they could be stillborn and that they died early on in the pregnancy, although I am not an expert and getting your vet to have alook might be an idea.

Here is a link with lots of info about still born piglets and causes. http://www.thepigsite.com/pighealth/article/234/the-stillborn-pig

It could be that your sow has an infection so it may be worthwhile getting your vet to look her over.

Any help and advice gratefully appreciated.
Kind regards

Hi Topveg,
I think it's a good idea to vaccinate for erysipelas, especially if the pigs are outside.
Kind regards
