I have about 175 Bob White quail chicks. They’re a week and three days old. They're in an old two-stall horse barn. They're sectioned off into a corner by two planks of wood with a red heat lamp. Inside that there's paper towels and pine shaving bedding underneath. Yesterday I bought some powder to stop bleeding and put it on some of them. I’ve added lettuce for them to peck and separated some of the injured into a small cage with food and water so they wouldn't get pecked more.

I agree that they’re overcrowded but if I let them out of the planks there are small holes near the bottom of the stall door. Multiple times to my dad I've mentioned plugging them up. I've place some cardboard there in the meantime.

Hi,
They will peck more if they see blood so if you can try to bathe those that are bleeding. You can also get an antiseptic spray that covers the red colour so less chance of them pecking at the blood.
Do they have places to hide in their enclosure, you could put some branches in a corner with straw on so that quail have hiding places to get out of the way. alos you could hang some veg up so they have things to peck at other than each other.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards

hello you dont say how old they are or where you keep them but this many quail all pecking at each other makes it sound to me like they are either overcrowded or bored, there are members on here who keep quail hopefully they will be able to offer advice when they see this

what are some techniques to prevent baby quail from pecking at each other until their beaks bleed? over twenty of my quail have bleeding beaks!

There is not just one bird pecking the others; a lot of them are pecking, sometimes each other. Some don't peck at all. a) pecking chicks who aren't pecked b) pecking chicks who are pecked too c) chicks who aren't pecking but are pecked d) chicks who neither peck or are pecked

Any help would be great!

I've got twelve right now, 9 females and 2 males. Started out with 17, then had them in a covered run outdoors. they foraged in the long grasses and had fun, then the foxes got six and scared all the others. So I put them in a spacious rabbit hutch in the barn, and from nine females I'm gettin eight eggs a day. Selling them at the market for $2.50 a dozen. They're really fun.

I just got some Coturnixes over here in America. I am one of two people with quail in our entire county, and 90% of folks I ask say they never heard of 'em before! Are they common in England? There seems to be a lot of quail talk on this forum.

Hi xubayr,
Welcome to the farmingfriends forum. Do you have corners with branches and cover for the quail to hide in and get shelter from the heat. Mine love to hide under branches I prop in the corner of their hut and they love it if I put lots of fresh straw in. I also have a board that partitions off some of the hut so they can shelter from wind, rain and sun (if we get it in the UK!)
Maybe your female is looking for a mate or wary of one of the others.
Hope she is ok.

Hi Sara,
Thanks for the reply. A few months ago, one of the males was pecking the other, so I separated him. The others were fine together. Then, recently, the male that was being pecked was pecked badly again, so I removed him. They are now both on their own.
Normally, they are fine, but sometimes, for no obvious reason, they will start hopping around.
Also, one of my female quails seems to be picking on the others. They will all be getting along nicely, then suddenly she will run at them and chase and peck them. The one being chased then flies up. Why is this? They have plenty of room, food etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jane,
I don't think I have seen this behaviour in my quail. Can you put a female with each of the males, then you would know that any eggs the females laid would be fertile!
Where the males pecking at each other? Are they hopping around now they are separated?

Hi,
I have had to separate two of my male japanese quail. I now have the main aviary, and then two separate hutches- one for each male. They were fine, but now they have started hopping around. They make no noise, and don't hop very high, then they turn round and do it again. I was just wondering if there was any reason they were doing this, and if it is okay to keep them on their own...?
Thanks for any help

Hi All,

Mandy posted this message on facebook and I wondered if any of you who have quail had come across this.

"Hi Sara, hope you can help, my quails are acting very strangely and have started attacking each other. I have 3 females and a male. Ive taken the male (Hef) out as all the feathers had been ripped out the back of his head and he was bleeding badly, also bleeding under one eye. Two females seem to be chasing each o...ther and putting their heads down and bums in air. We had a spot of bother with one of the females a few weeks back, as she was brooding, we separated her from the others but as soon as this was done she stopped. We now remove the eggs as soon as they are laid. Help!! Mandy"

My response was,
Hi Mandy, I haven't come across this behaviour before, it could be that now the male is not in with them these two females are vying for who is top quail they could be fighting to establish the pecking order now the male has been separated. I will post your question on my forum and see if any of the members with quail have come across this. Kind regards Sara @ farmingfriends

Hope you can help.

Hi Jane, With my Japanese quail the only ones who stand tall and sing are the males but maybe it is different with the Chinese. My girls all make a quiet peeting sound only. Don't think quail mate for life. Maybe she just fancies one male more than the other. My girls had their favourites when I had more boys, some of the boys never got a chance to mate. Poor boys!!!

Hi jane,
My males stand up tall and have a shrill trill like call, wonder if your chinese quail is a male?!
My japanese females tend to make abit of a quiet cooing noise and if they are about to lay they can make a sort of quiet cry out.
I wonder if the stopping and then running about behaviour is excitement and trying to impress a female? I know ducks do this when they are wanting to mate!

Hello everybody,
I have a few questions...
Firstly, my chinese quail is standing up tall and making a laughing noise. Why is she doing this, and is it okay?
Also, one of my japanese quail, I think one of the females, is making a quiet frog-like noise. Is this okay?
Another thing, I had 3 males, but one was aggressive so I separated him. The other two are living fine with the females. But now, one of the males can be standing on his own, and then he will randomly bend down and run around, then stop and be okay. Why does he do this?
Thanks for all your help

Hi Madchick,
Sounds like your quail are reaching sexual maturity and starting to mate. The males can really damage the females and sometimes each other as one male will try to mate and the other male will have a go at him and try to usurp him. If you aren't worried about fertile eggs you could leave the males and females separate or try just one male with the group, or split the girls into two groups with one male each. My quail have suffered from overenthusiastic mating but always seem to pull through.
Best wishes

Hello topveg, I am really interested in your home feeder. My husband made some for our chucks ducks and geese and put a roof on to stop the food getting wet. They do work but would always like another idea. Could you explain it a little more clearly for me please. Regards Mama.

Hi Hap,
The problem you have with your quail rolling in the food might be solved by getting them some grit. My 2 button quail love to take baths in it. About the other problem, that's happened to me before and though the female (coturnix) didn't die, her head was injured. It's been a couple years and the feathers still haven't grown back. I ended up giving the male quail (bobwhite) back to the breeder and we got another male (coturnix) instead. Now I have no problems with injurys or fighting. Your problem might be because of one particuler male.
Just because I'm curious, what kind of quail do you have?
best of luck,
Willa
