Hi
I am new to the forum, but have had quails in the past which I have kept successfully with aviary birds, but I now have several breeds of hens in together (both bantam and large) and when any other type of bird comes into their territory they get very aggressive.

I thought all eggs will have a yolk as that is what a baby inside feeds on as they grow in shell (or is that just ducks?)

I thought you could only tell in fertile once you incubate them for 7 days :) I'm not sure with quails I just assumed all eggs do the same type of thing

Hi
We now have 10 chicks! They are brilliant. My son converted a plastic toy box into a brooder for them by adding a red light and air holes. They seem to be very happy.
We had one hatch that seemed very droopy and it's head hung and eyes shut well after the others were up and running around. Having read one of your posts I left it in the incubator longer then the others (who had been climbing all over it) and gave it sugar water. He seems fine now.
Many thanks

Hi Philippa,
Well done on getting a quail chick, hope the hatching is going ok.
You will have to see how the male and females react to the chicks. The quail will be mature at 6 weeks though, so they can be mixed then if not before.
Looking forward to hearing more about the quail and the the chicks.

Hi. My son bought a male and 2 femail Japanese Quails a few months ago. He put 12 eggs into an incubator 17 days ago and about an hour ago one of the eggs hatched.
He has arranged for someone to swap the cock bird (and any male offspring) from us once the young are old enough to join the adults, which brings me to my question. At what age will I be able to introduce the young birds(hoping that there will be more successful hatchlings!)?

Thanks so much for all that advice, I have separated my little white hen now with another hen for company, who was slightly pecking her, but seem to have calmed down now. So complicated!

Hi Bexter,
Welcome to the farmingfriends forum. The recommended amount of males to females is 1 male to about 6 females, so if you can either get more females or less males this may help.
If you got rid of her the males would just turn their attention to another female. they are picking on her as she is probably the lowest in the pecking order, if she is smaller than the other females then this would be why, she would be an easy target to mate with.
Kind regards

Hi,
I have 11 button Quails 5 males, and 6 hens - there is one little white hen, who is being picked on by the males and pecked during mating - she spends all day trying to run and hide from them. The others dont have the same problem - we have separated her with another hen for company, but she paces up and down, as do the males - help? Should I get rid of her - I feel so so sad for her

Hi quaglia,
Yes I have, mine are in an aviary that I can stand up in and sometimes if they get spooked they will fly up. they don't like sudden movements and they don't like me wearing a red/pink/orange top, these colours seem to really spook them. You could put some soft material on the roof of the hut to stop them hurting their heads.

Hi quaglia,
I would not put quail and hens together. I have read that quail can get poorly from living with hens and as has been mentioned I have found hens to be a more agressive breed towards other species of birds. my hens will square up to my ducks who are larger than them if the ducks get too close!

Hi,

I've got a couple dozen quails in their own hutch. There was a fighting issue with the males, where one had his head so badly pecked that he lost all of his facial skin and feathers. After he healed I tried putting him and two hen quail in with my chickens, and they nearly got eaten. The chickens went at them insanely. So unless your hens aren't as bloodthirsty as mine, it may not work well keeping the two species together. I have large-fowl chickens, but bantams may coexist well with quail, being more size-similiar.

Hi,
I have japanese quail and to be honest they seem very docile and don't fly up. Apparently they can jump/ fly up to 6 or 7 feet...
I have got a circular chicken pellet feeder and this is very good for my quail, but I also have an aviary drinker and this doesn't work very well- they just kick the straw etc into it and it gets dirty and clogged.
Sorry, I don't know about the chickens, but I think I have read in previous posts that some breeds of chicken are very aggressive, so not sure...

I am just about to acquire 4 quail. 3 hens and 1 cock. I am planning to keep them in a chicken-type run and coop but am concerned about them bashing their heads on the wire when they fly up startled. Are there solutions to this? Also, I already keep chickens - is there a possibility of putting them together further down the line? Are there particular feeders that suit quail?
Thanks for all advice - needed and welcomed!

Hi S Brown,
You can mix different groups of quail but they will need careful introducing, usually when it is night and they are more docile. You can keep them side by side for a while till they get used to each other. http://farmingfriends.com/mixing-quail-of-different-ages/
I would wait to see on their gender, they will be mature by 6-8 weeks old and you will be able to tell males and females easily if they are japanese quail. http://farmingfriends.com/quail-gender-identification/ Once you know that as Mo says you could just buy in more females. It depends if you want the experience of hatching your own, but as Mo says you may get more males.
Good luck whatever you decide to do.

hello I don't have quail but do keep ducks, if you say you think the majority are male im assuming they are to young to sex yet and i'm assuming you're asking this because you would like more females, if this is the case my advice would be to either wait until you're sure of the sex or just go and buy females, to incubate eggs would take the very high risk of haveing even more males,
