I have 6. They have been fine ever since! not a peep out of them? Someone must have said someone is putting on a bit of weight or something. Bunch of looneys.
Turkeys are funny but are rather stupid (No where near as dumb as pheasants though!) They arnt scatty which is nice but they are a bit slow sometimes, and make a funny noise when there is something unusal, they are amusing though.

Oh No!
Why cant things just get along!
Life has been fine in the turkey world, until this morning.....I tootled up the garden as normal and there was a strange noise coming from the turkeys-2 of them are being attacked by others. 2 are just running around not hurting anyone then 2 girls with their beaks clamped on the others skin/wobbily head bits, and the 2 boys the same!
So I dived straight in to seperate them, they were determined to fight, so I spent a while seperating them and seeing who was fighting with who, so now all seperated into friendly groups again, I dont know what on earth has got into them! They have lived together so happily for months, now all this!
I was speaking to a neighbour who I havnt seen before and she was saying they had been doing it for a couple of minutes and she was going to come and get me but then herd me shouting at them, she was very kind and said she has a dog kennel/run she doesnt use and I could put one of the naughty turkeys in there, I have the space and sections to split them up but I thought how lovely and kind that was of her! I think a delivery of duck eggs to her is in order!
Anyone else experienced turkeys going crazy?

Hello All!
Time for me to waffle on about my little bunch of feathered friends. For those of you who dont know I have ducks & turkeys.
I have 4 white Cherry Valley Ducks-Shpoopie, Tee, Cherry and Coconut, 1 Magpie Duck-Pye, 1 Trout Indian Runner Duck-Plum, 1 Dark Khaki Campbell-Sausage and my White Campbell Drake-Campbell (yes thats his name)
And 6 Turkeys, 4 Bourbon Reds 2 boys-Virgor & Gorgon, 2 girls, Zola & Sector. 1 (maybe a girl??)mystery black one-Lemon and 1 (maybe a girl?)Slate Grey-Keith. (I was supposed to have 2 reds & 3 greys...)
SO, I went on holiday for a week and my parnters little bro looked after them for me-very well too!
Sausage has been strange for a while and when I came back from holiday I went to greet her to say hello and I was welcomed by hissing, heavy breathing and anger......nice. But its good because she has gone super broody! She is crazy broody. Comes out and gets herself in the pond and does some weird "belly wetting" then scamps back in to the eggs. She covers them all over when she isnt there, she has collected everyones and is sat on them. Poor other ducks now dont know where to lay their eggs. so they are back scattered all over the place-found 2 of Plums eggs in the pond...nice.. Campbell is generally being a horrible raping boy at this time of year, he has his favourites and his least favourites. Poor Cherry and Coconut he seems to hate, if he is in the pond and they come for a drink or a splash he chases them off, then poor Shpoopie has a bald neck from his raping. Tee, Pye & Plum seem to be his "wives" as he is very nice to them and doesnt chase after them trying to bonk them all the time. Sausage is out the question as she is broody now. So the pitter patter of little duckie feet soon! 2-3 weeks as Im unsure when she started sitting as I was away. Cherry has had an ikky eye poor thing but is on the mend!
Turkey babies....well what naughty little things-well they arnt really babies anymore, they are quite huge! No where near fully grown though! They eat EVERYTHING, I let them out and then they grab mouthfuls of my vegetables, so I have barricaded the way from their pen to the grass & trees as they are beside my veggie patch. They love being up a height, Virgor decided he wanted to be in the tree-the branches on the walnut tree are rather low, so 1 turkey in a tree branch, then....all other turkey babies are hurling themselves at the branch-turkeys on the branch are now on the floor, feathers everywhere, chaos, I was giggling my pants off, check out my facebook for turkeys in a tree. They arnt very agile and have what seems like zero balance, they they plop out all the time then scramble back up with a mixture of flapping and clawing. Poor turkeys who have made it into the branch then get shoved off by a friend. This isnt just the tree, we have a bench, Gorgon jumped up then 2 seconds later, all turkeys flying at the branch! Suprisingly they do fly rather well, they get all excited when I let them out and flap around, they can fly about 5 foot into the air, with no sense of direction-3 flew over the fence into next door and "couldnt" fly back, they just ran backwards and forwards along the fence making their weird barking noises. So I had to climb the fence and chuck them all back over the wall, they think its great fun to rung towards me, then run away when I try and pick them up, they dont like being picked up but its something they shall have to deal with! I dont like being eaten by them but I put up with it. They love a lettuce or cabbage hung up for them to peck at for hours until they destroy it. Lettuce lasts around 2 minutes, cabbages are a bit more sturdy! Ducks also like cabbage, even though they turned their beaks up at me when I first offered them it. I hung it up then it was the best thing ever-they much prefer lettuce though, I think its easier for them to eat.
I have woodchipped around the pond so they dont get it so muddy, they seems to like it more! And they are super clean now!
I shall be getting some chickens soon as I dont like buying chicken eggs, feels so weird after having chickens for so long then no eggs (for those of you who dont know I lost my other boy ducks and my chickens to a £@$&@?£ fox.
Maybe some Buff orpingtons or rocks? I dont know I want some that lay OK and something that I can breed the chicks to sell also. Any ideas??
I fancy some little bantams too...but need to bribe the boyfriend to make one of those little triangle arks that we can put a couple in and move around the garden, then I can sell their babies. Maybe Pekin bantams-the black & white mottled would be nice!
I was going to get a new husband for Sausage since Belle my hansome friendly khaki campbell got taken by the fox (RIP Belle my beautiful boy :( ) which I was going to get when I came back from holiday-but since she has gone broody, I think i shall have to wait a while since this definatly isnt the right time for her!
Well I think thats enough waffle for now.
I hope all you are well and your little feathered friends are healthy and happy.
xxxx

Hi Pinkpoultry,
I am not an expert on turkeys but I have been learning a lot from a book. The book is "Starting with Turkeys" by Katie Thear. I have found out from my own turkeys that they start laying in early April and finish in early to mid July. It depends on the light, so you can add extra light (a low watt bulb) in March to encourage them to start laying early. I live in Andalucia Spain, so I think they get more light in March than they would in England. I fed my poults on chick crumb at the start and then moved on to pellets when they got bigger. They like veg. scraps and I also hang a cabbage for them to eat and play with. It stops them getting bored. Hope I'v been some help but for expert advice buy a book like I did.
Best wishes Bill

Hello All,
As some of you may know I have 6 turkey babies that hached out on Easter Sunday, making them 2 months, 1 week and 3 days old. I bought 6 eggs, they were supposed to be 3 bourbon reds and 3 slate greys, but I actually have 4 bourbon reds, 1 slate grey and a black one... (naughty mother!) They are lovely little guys, a bit nutty but hey! Thats all good!
Bill, you seem to know alot about turkeys! I was wondering if you had any advice for a new turkey owner?
What we got them for was for Christmas, I didnt expect all 6 eggs to hatch! So we are having 2 for Christmas, swapping 1 for a goose, so that leaves 3. Which we would like to keep for them to have babies for next year. And then have those for Christmas too.
I THINK (I have zero experience!) that I have 2 boys and 4 girls. Reasons for this are, 2 of the bourbon reds are bigger than the rest and their "nubbin" of skin above their beaks is larger than the others, those two are getting lots of bumps on their necks and I have seen them fluffing themselves right up and fanning their tails out and walking around each other-their necks and heads go bright red/purple when they do this, then go back to the pinky/white when they stop-the other 4 seem not to care at all. So are they boys do you think? Can you tell this young?
More questions!
When do turkeys start laying eggs? Will it be this year or next year?
Are the two boys OK to be in with each other or will they fight like cockrels when they are older? They seems to freak out if I seperate them from each other, they all sleep and go everywhere in a big "turkey-baby-ball" They are never more than a few inches from each other!
I have hung up a cabbage for them to peck at which they seem to love, any other things I should do to enrich their lives?
Many thanks guys! I want them to have a nice life and be happy!
P.S. Campbell my drake doesnt like them at all, he goes all angry if they come near him or his ladies. Also Tee one of my ducks throws herself at the turkeys if they are out at the same time, the turkeys look at her like she is nuts, but then leg it away from Campbell! Lol.
Thanks again

Hi Everyone,
As promised I have an update on my turkeys. The six poults are growing and are healthy. The lady that gave me the eggs, called me last week and asked me if I wanted more turkeys. She had eight poults , two weeks old and their mother. I said I would have them as I have lots of space in my new turkey area. When I went to pick them up, she told me I could also have the two stags, which are about five months old. I was not planning to start my breeding program at this stage but could not leave the two stages on their own. So I now have fourteen poults, two stags and the poults mother. A total of seventeen lavender turkeys. I had a spare white cockerel which the lady wanted so that was the deal, one cockerel for eleven lavender turkeys. I shall now be breeding lots of lavender turkeys. I'm glad I can share some good news with the friends on this forum. The goose eggs that the goose was sitting on did not come to anything and I had to take them away from her. She can try again next year. Best wishes from Bill

It could be a normal moult or they may have an infestation of mites. Have a close look and see if you can spot the tiny little red things. You can get red mite powder very easily from pet or poultry suppliers. You have to dust the birds and there sleeping quarters.

Hi Sara (admin)
You asked "what breed are the turkeys?" I said they were silver, infact they are Lavender Turkeys. My wife thinks I must need new glasses, as I said they were silver. Well they are not white and look like dirty silver to me. The lady who gave me the eggs has confirmed they are Lavender / blue turkeys. I now know what breed they are---and so do you. Best wishes Bill

Hi Lorna,
The geese are doing well. I have had lots of eggs this year but I have not put any in the incubator as I thought I had enough geese but one of them has decided to sit on an egg. So I placed six fresh goose eggs in the nest and she is happy to stay on them. She has been sitting for five days now so I'm now sure she will stay until the end. She has decided I don't have enough geese. Best regards Bill

Hi everyone, Five months ago I posted "protect your birds" as I had my turkeys stolen. I didn't want to hatch any more as I thought they might go the same way. A friend gave me some eggs last month so I thought, what the hell, I'll start again with turkeys. I put them in the incubator and I now have 6 healthly poults. They are only a week old but they are eating and drinking well. I will not make the same mistake again by putting them in a pen next to the outside fence. When they are older their pen will be in the garden near my chicken house. this area is open to my dogs, who ignore the ducks, chickens, geese and guinea fowl, but will defend their land against any strangers. The turkeys are silver, the same as the ones I had stolen. Will keep you informed of their progress. Best regards Bill
