Two Drakes

It would appear that after having our ducks for 6 weeks now that we do indeed have two drakes. We have an Aylesbury Drake and an Indian Runner Drake, along with three Aylesbury/indian runner hybrids. The birds were 14 weeks when we bought them and are now starting to settle down to life in my garden where they have a large run and pond. The Indian Runner has claimed the territory as his own and is now bullying the much bigger Aylesbury who is constantly on his guard. We are willing and happy enough to buy further Ducks to try and quash this behavior...will it work.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Welcome bingo. It sounds as if you have some lovely ducks, Don't quite understand the Aylesbury/ Indian runner hybrids.Have you got three Aylesburys and three Indian runners ? Whatever birds we have need to establish pecking order and that may be the case with yours . Sara admin or one of the other duck owners will be able to help . Regards Mama

  3. Hi Bingo,
Welcome to the farmingfriends forum. It sounds like the Indian Runner is the top duck. I would suggest the more ducks may help the rivalry as long as they have enough ducks each to occupy them. If the ducks don't do the trick then you may need to segregate them into groups!
Hope you get it sorted and the aylesbury isn't picked on too much!
    Kind regards

    hi Bingo,
We have had problems after keeping some of last years hatch. We decided we had to sell one of our males along with two females and at present have two males with 4 females but the problems are even worse now the young male is mature and the males are now seperated. The younger male just has his sister for company.
This year we have a hatch of 12 ducklings so we will have to be ruthless and keep no more males and hopefully keep a couple of females with our younger pair.

If you do get some more females, Aylesburys would be better for him and they may just take themselves off more quietly from the flock, but like me, you may have to have two seperate groups.
Campbell and runner drakes are very amorous and energetic and can be very aggressive towards other males.

i started with 2 ducks 1 male and 1 female, then i thought one was a girl so was given a male white duck to keep them company. then i bought a female aylesbury. a few weeks later one of the 'females' drake feathers popped up so i have 2 girls and 2 boys. they are all very happy, the white duck is over a year old and he was beaten up by a group of runner duck drakes, had all his neck feathers pulled out. they dont seem to dislike eachother, but i guess anything could happen come mating season, i couldnt get rid of any of them i love them too much!!

  9. Hi quackers, I am dreading the thought of ever having to part with any of my ducks as like you I love them all, to much actually, but part of loving them is wanting each and every one of them to have a happy peaceful life and if to acheive this it means parting with any of them then that is what i will do,I would prefere to part with them than to watch one suffer abuse from another x

Mo it is hard sometimes but know you will do the right thing for all your loved ducks. As you know we had to do the same with Sid and Gordon . We still see him though with his three new lovely ladies and that makes us happy . Best wishes Mama x

    That's very true Mo.
Hi Bingo, we started with 5 Khaki campbells which turned out to be 4 drakes and 1 duck, 1 of the drakes was picked on alot and so we sold the other 3 and replaced them with 3 white campbells which fortunately turned out to be ducks. Phew. They all live very happily together now. It seems the less drakes you have the easier it is to deal with!

Theres an old farmer who breeds everything from Rabbits to Jungle fowl who i know, i get all my birds for next to nothing from him, i said i want two young ducks to keep my boys happy and for a few £ i got two young ducks. My wife wanted a pair of Lavender Pekin chickens i had a wad of notes ready and he said £10! I tend not to ask technical questions or else he may start charging me what he charges others. :)
