Females Quail Fighting & Behaving Strangely

(4 posts)

  1. Hi All,

Mandy posted this message on facebook and I wondered if any of you who have quail had come across this.

"Hi Sara, hope you can help, my quails are acting very strangely and have started attacking each other. I have 3 females and a male. Ive taken the male (Hef) out as all the feathers had been ripped out the back of his head and he was bleeding badly, also bleeding under one eye. Two females seem to be chasing each o...ther and putting their heads down and bums in air. We had a spot of bother with one of the females a few weeks back, as she was brooding, we separated her from the others but as soon as this was done she stopped. We now remove the eggs as soon as they are laid. Help!! Mandy"

    My response was,
Hi Mandy, I haven't come across this behaviour before, it could be that now the male is not in with them these two females are vying for who is top quail they could be fighting to establish the pecking order now the male has been separated. I will post your question on my forum and see if any of the members with quail have come across this. Kind regards Sara @ farmingfriends

    Hope you can help.
    kind regards

Hi, lately my female quail is acting oddly, facing and moving the face in directions. Looks, right, then up, then left, i'm worried, it's also hot temperature here in Dubai, does it have affect on them?

  3. Hi xubayr,
Welcome to the farmingfriends forum. Do you have corners with branches and cover for the quail to hide in and get shelter from the heat. Mine love to hide under branches I prop in the corner of their hut and they love it if I put lots of fresh straw in. I also have a board that partitions off some of the hut so they can shelter from wind, rain and sun (if we get it in the UK!)
Maybe your female is looking for a mate or wary of one of the others.
    Hope she is ok.
    Kind regards

Thanks for the reply. :) I have 2 females and a male. One female is attacking the other, I tried separating them for a while but she keeps attacking and other one keeps running away. The male is not helping :D
