Hi Sara, Long time no speak, sorry been a bit hectic. One of my quail has decided it is an ATTACK Quail. She is very amusing as every time I go in she goes for my ankles. I think she is one of the splay leg chicks so she probably has bad memories of band aids!!! Very funny to watch her trying to get as high as one's knees to attack. Must say the egg laying is a bit hit and miss at the moment but Pie is doing his bit to try to egg the girls on. Not too much aggression between the boys at the moment so will allow them to stay a little longer.

    Hope you are well.

    Kind regards

out of 13 quail I have 6 girls and 7 boys so way out of balance. Hatched them in an incubator so had no choice of sex. Unfortunately the rat that raided my quail run last autumn decimated the girls (took 9 of them!). Will try to buy some girlies this summer to redress the balance.

  4. Hi Sallie,
Really good to hear from you and good to hear about the quail although sorry that you have an attacking female. She is obviously hormonal! It's interesting to hear that the males are getting on ok. Glad that Pie is ok.
I have just hatched some quail chicks off for a friend and got 9 healthy chick. My friend's grandaughter now has five of them so four left. I still have my 13 japanese quail and they are doing really well in the aviary hut.
    Kind regards

    Hi Sara,
Our incubator is full of Golden Pheasant and Ring Neck pheasant eggs at the moment but may try to hatch some more quail later. Did think I might just buy some slightly older youngsters as can pick and choose what sex to redress the balance. Eggs very hit and miss - nothing for the past 2 days. Could be this up and down weather I suppose but it may be that the girls are getting too much hassle from the lads!

    Hope all well with you.

    Kind regards

  6. Hi sallie,
It's really good to hear from you and I hope all is well with you and that you have stopped being attacked by your "rottie" quail!

The golden pheasant and ring neck pheasant sound interesting. I would be interested to see photos when they hatch.

My quail in the aviary are laying well but my barn reared quail are not all laying.

Things are busy here on the farm with calves being born, looking after piglets and quail chicks as well as collecting and delivering eggs to local farmshops and restaurants.

    Best wishes

    Hi Sara,

Attack Quail is still at it. No eggs for a week now don't know what is wrong. All quail are eating and drinking and I have despatched 2 boys to reduce the tension but NOTHING!!! Lost one hen yesterday, she seemed to have had a spook and damaged her breast. Totally bruised, can't work out how. May have to reduce the boys still further and buy in some more girls. Not happy bunnies at the moment. Hope all well with you. We are planning on having a pig to bring on for the freezer shortly, will keep it where I keep the horse as they are having two pigs as well. Two went to butcher a fortnight ago and the meat is so much better than shop bought. Lovely when you know what they ate and where they lived etc. Will take some more photos and send them to you when that spare minute turns up.

    best wishes

  8. Hi Sallie,
I wonder why your attacking quail is attacking? I wonder whether she is not very well and lashing out. Sometimes cats and dog will behave like this when they are not very well?!
Sorry to hear that you are not getting many eggs.
I wonder whether your bruised female flew against the wall of your run?
The quail in the aviary are all doing well still. Being in an aviary with access to natural light and exposed to the elements abit seems to keep them healthy, more so that the quail that live in the large barn.
I have pigs - Saddlebacks and they are a joy to look after and the piglets are lovely. My piglets are now 5 weeks old and becoming very mischievous!
What pigs are you planning on getting?
I agree - the meat tastes superb and better knowing what the pig has been fed, how the pig has been treated and knowing that you have cared for it well.
I look forward to seeing your photos.

    Hi Sara,
Rotty Quail has calmed down now I have reduced the ranks of males that were probably driving her mad. Miscalculated - only seem to have 3 hens the rest are boys so way out of balance. Now down to Pie and I dark and 2 light quail cocks but may reduce ranks still further. Have one that I can't tell if its a girl or a boy so will have to stand and see if it calls!!! Eggs back on track. 3 each day which is why I think I am down to 3 hens only. Huge eggs. I am hoping to put some eggs under a friends banty as our incubator is going to be used for pheasants for the next month. The pigs were saddleback x old spot but the next lot are x tamworth so that should be interesting.

    Speak soon.

  10. Hi Sallie,
Glad to hear that Rottie quail has calmed down. Was she losing the feathers on her head due to the male attention as this is a sure sign that she is getting male attention!
    Are your eggs double yolkers?
You'll have to let me know how you get on with the pheasant eggs.
Look forward to hearing about the x tamworth pigs. My saddleback piglets are nearing 7 weeks and are growing well. We will be tagging them this week so that they are not too big as they are growing fast.
Good to catch up and best wishes

    Hi Sara,

Yes attack quail had signs of being treaded. As mentioned elsewhere have separated boys and girls as my little dark quail is being skinned alive round the head and neck. 3 eggs daily now from my 3 hens. Was going to incubate some but as boys separated wont do that now. Will get some from somewhere to even out the numbers. We do have a place nearby that does quail commercially so my call in and try to get some ex layers.

    best wishes

  12. Hi Sallie,
It is unbelieveable to see the damage the male quail does to the female quail, poor things.
Good luck getting your new quail.
    Kind regards
