Hiya.. me again! My previously 'lonely duck' now seems to have a problem when walking/running. Her legs move more like a cartoon duck (legs seem to go round to the sides when lifted before being placed down in front of her), and if she tries to run too fast she falls over and seems to open her wings to gain balance and then just stays put for a short time before getting up again. Any ideas? Thanks...

Hi Karen
Sorry to hear about the problem of the lonely duck with getting around. Would she have hurt her legs in any way?
Maybe it is something hereditary, I do not know. Maybe it is something to do with her brain. Just some thoughts. I never experienced this with mine. I hope things improve soon.Best Wishes

Hi Karen, this is not something I have heard of either but I would get some worming liquid for a start and also try some cider vinegar or poultry vitamins in her water. If after a few days she seems to be getting worse or no better, you may need to take her to the vet for possible antibiotics.

Thanks for the responses....didn't know you need to worm ducks the same as chickens, so will do that tomorrow. Unfortunately the duck can barely walk at all now, so I will try and have a closer look at her in the morning.
Thanks for the link - I read through and got more and more concerned at how serious this could be! we lost a few chickens a couple of months ago, so I really hope we don't lose any more of our little friends...

Hiya. I'm sorry to say that our little duck died this afternoon - at least she isn't suffering anymore. Post Mortems for poultry are free in Ireland (the only thing that is!!) so I will be ringing the vet to get the go ahead to take her in as I am interested to find out what was wrong. We only had her around a month, and I do think it was something she came to us with. Fingers crossed it can't be passed on!

Hello Karen
Oh I am so sorry that your little duck died today. I hope that the post mortem shows you what was wrong and that it will not be passed on. Yes it is good she has not got to suffer anymore, poor wee soul.
Did you seperate your other ducks from the little duck when you initially got her?. I know it is recommended to keep any new stock about 5 to 7 days at least from the already established ones, if you have at least the others should be OK. Ducks are hardy so if they have shown no symptoms they are probably fine.
By the way are you in the South or North of Ireland? I live in Northern Ireland. I remember having to pay for post mortem at my Vets of a little hen that died.
Love

Hi Karen,
So sorry to hear that you duck dies. It is a good idea to have a post mortem done if not too costly as you say it will tell you wahat the matter was and then you can watch out for this in the future. Sorry again for your loss.
Kind regards
sara @ farmingfriendsPosted 2 years ago # -
So sorry Karen, but hopefully the vet will be able to give you an answer as it may put your mind at rest . Regards Mama
Goose GirlPosted 2 years ago # -
Oh that is sad. Im sorry to hear that. It does sound like she may have come with a disease of some sort. Hope the others aren't affected too.

Hiya. We bought this duck with two others from a local poultry fair, and didn't separate them from the rest of the flock. I don't know why, as we know full well that you should! She never really mingled with the others, so I do think she came to us with something. The other ducks and chickens are all looking fine (fingers crossed).
The vet lab is unable to take any more corpses for PM, so it looks like we won't get an answer.
I am in Cork, Southern Ireland and had PM's done on 3 chickens before and wasn't charged as apparently it is free for poultry here. The vet didn't charge me for all the help with booking in or correspondence from the lab either, which they do in other areas. To be fair, he has been great. Shame I didn't have chickens before we moved here from the UK as it would be interesting to compare service and costs
Thanks again for your messages.
On a positive note, our first ever chick has hatched this am! Very excited and looking to see how many we get from our 12 chicken and 4 duck eggs.
KarenKaren xPosted 2 years ago # -
That's lovely news about your hatch, look forward to hearing all about it . What breeds are you hatching.? Regards mama
Goose GirlPosted 2 years ago # -
Hi Karen
That is great about the chick hatching, I hope you have a great hatch. It is funny how often something good happens after a sad event. You will have your hands full with that after they all hatch.
Best Wishes

Hi Karen,
Good to hear that the eggs have started to hatch after your bad news.
Kind regards
sara @ farmingfriendsPosted 2 years ago # -
Morning! We have 4 marans hatched and one that I think is a white sussex (we had a bit of a magical mystery mix!) I think we may have a couple more hatch today before we remove the other eggs from the incubator.
Re: the duck PM - the lab was too busy, so the vet has taken the corpse and after submerging it in water, has frozen it until next week when a PM can be organised. They did tell me what to do but I must confess that although I am happy to do whatever it takes to help out poorly chickens/ducks, I am a bit squeemish when dealing with corpses with rigamortis (not spelt right.. sorry)!

Good news on the eggs and hope you can send some pics. I totally agree ie freezing a corpse. It will be interesting to hear what they find . Regards Mama
Goose GirlPosted 2 years ago # -
Hi Karen
That is nice to hear things are going well on the hatching front.
I am glad that the Vet will sort out the PM.Lorna

We have 9 chicks! Didn't think that was bad for the first time out of 12 eggs. We had put 4 duck eggs in the week before from our own flock but they didn't turn out to be fertilised.
5 are under the heat lamp and 4 are still in the incubator 'fluffing'up. Am amazed at how cute they are! Anyway, will try and post some photos soon.

Just found out the Post Mortem results from the vet, and it turns out that our duck had an obstruction in her reproduction tubes which caused an egg to get trapped and then infected. Poor thing - just wish I had both spotted this and been able to save her.
xKaren xPosted 2 years ago # -
Hello, You may not have been able to spot it so don't feel too bad. Sounds like egg bound but not quite the same as she already had an obstruction. How are your little ones doing? well I hope . Regards Mama
Goose GirlPosted 2 years ago # -
Hi Karen
the obstruction was probably always there, maybe it was something heridary (sp). Hope the other chicks are still doing well.
Lorna.Posted 2 years ago # -
Thanks. We did have an egg bound chicken before that I was able to massage at the vent and then sort out, so it wasn't like I would be adverse to a bit of DIY vetting! Still sad though.. poor little thing.
On a more positive note the chicks are doing great (touch wood), with the feathers and tails growing well. I have taken some photos and will try and download them so you can have a look... bit tricky though as they kept running off everytime the flash went off!

Keep trying Karen , we are all waiting . Regards Mama
