Plastic Fencing For Hens Non Electric

(9 posts)

  1. Hi All,

A neighbour is giving me his 14 hens that are 3 years old and hubby is not too happy about it, says they will scrat up the garden etc.

I thought I might get some plastic hen fencing with poles to put up around the hen hut for at least the first few weeks to contain them in an area. I have seen some plastic netting on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Green-Chicken-Coop-Chicken-Run-Chicken-Netting-5-5kg-/320593778820?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Dogs&hash=item4aa4e0d884
The poles are separate to this.

Does anyone know of where to get this sort of fencing/netting?

We already have sheep netting but the hens can just walk straight through this!

    I don't want electric fencing.

I have googled it and spent ages looking at all the different sites, just wondered if anyone had got any from somewhere that was cheap and they would recommend!

    Thanks
    Kind regards

  3. Hi Sara

Hens can be a particular nuisance when you are sowing seeds - they love to have dust baths in the seed bed- and scratch all the seeds up!

We got our plastic netting from Louth, Lincolnshire

It is quite a big, efficient set up now & it can be ordered online. They started small & were very helpful and practical to us - so I would phone them & tell discuss what would be most suitable. A huge investment- but if you get the right stuff it lasts forever!
Perhaps your hubby will be so pleased that you are fencing them in that he may be quite pleased to cough up!

Hi Sara, We just put 50cm high round mesh wire along the bottom of sheep fencing. It works and not expensive, just fastened it with green twisty garden tie . Yes they will scrat up the garden but not too bad as eventually you will let them roam .Regards Mama

I dont let my hens anywhere near my garden as they have no respect for my desire to eat the plants they peck as seedlings - it is my garden that is in the pen *wink* but now the slugs are into everything it is all very sad...

When Darwin is a bit bigger can i put him in the garden pen without fear he will eat all my plants?

    Cheers

Hi Sara, Have you thought about the stuff they use at roadworks. This is cheap and you may even get it free if you chat up some builders or road workers!!! Try googling safety fencing as I think this is what they call it. As it is meant to be used only once or twice it is a lot cheaper than specialised netting. Will go and have a look for it.
    Best wishes
    Sallie.
