Hi,
I have had to separate two of my male japanese quail. I now have the main aviary, and then two separate hutches- one for each male. They were fine, but now they have started hopping around. They make no noise, and don't hop very high, then they turn round and do it again. I was just wondering if there was any reason they were doing this, and if it is okay to keep them on their own...?
Thanks for any help

Hi Jane,
I don't think I have seen this behaviour in my quail. Can you put a female with each of the males, then you would know that any eggs the females laid would be fertile!
Where the males pecking at each other? Are they hopping around now they are separated?
Sorry can't be more helpful.
Kind regards

Hi Sara,
Thanks for the reply. A few months ago, one of the males was pecking the other, so I separated him. The others were fine together. Then, recently, the male that was being pecked was pecked badly again, so I removed him. They are now both on their own.
Normally, they are fine, but sometimes, for no obvious reason, they will start hopping around.
Also, one of my female quails seems to be picking on the others. They will all be getting along nicely, then suddenly she will run at them and chase and peck them. The one being chased then flies up. Why is this? They have plenty of room, food etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.Posted 2 years ago # -
Sounds like breeding behaveour to me I hope they all get along ok and I'd just leave them to that's what I do with my chinese painted painted quail an they all gradually calm down
