Hey Guys,
Went out to see my little guys this morning, and one of the chicks ( around 4 months old) I found just lying on the floor, not making any noise, only when I picked her up she squeeked a bit. But then didnt seem bothered by me, She is cold and covered in mud, I have put her in the brooder with the heat lamp on with some food and water, I have felt all over her and she isnt making any noises of pain. I dont know whats happened, I know my rooster chases the younger ones but would he injure one of them this badly? If so he has to go.
I feel so guilty because I have had to come out to work for the day and have had to leave poor Pookey all alone. I tried to stand her up and its like she just cant use her legs, she can straighten them and they shake but nothing else, I put her beak in the water and she didnt drink.
Thank you for all your help as usual.

ahh Laura this is so sad especially as you have done should a good job takeing in Andys ducks, I really hope she gets better soon, sounds like you have done all you can for now, hopefully once warm and calm she will eat and drink, sounds like she is in shock of some kind and theres nothing to say your rooster did this or did it deliberatly x

Hi Laura,
So sorry to ehar about your hen. The heat lamp is a good idea as she will not have to use energy to keep warm. When my guinea pig was poorly I am sure he got better for a little while because I put him under the heat lamp.
I wonder if some warm sugared water would help?
Could she have worms? I know that worms can affect a hens legs but not sure if it would affect her this much?
Hope she gets better soon. Thinking of you.
Best Wishes

I have some worming stuff, I shall do that immediatley as soon as I get in, and the sugared water.
Thank you Sara
I shall worm the others too.
Oh now I do feel bad for not worming them!!! Poor things

Hi laura, when we rescued a hit and run pheasant, it couldn't use its legs for a few days, Wildlife aid said nothing was broken and it was due to trauma to the spine, and it recovered completely. so it may be that your cockeral has tossed it about and hopefully the damage will be temporary.
Males of any species can be aggressive towards young, but as Sara says it could be worms.
Hope it is better when you get back.

Hi there - I too am sorry to hear about you hen being poorly. I agree with the worms bit - on occasion one of our hens goes funny and my mum ( a real chook lady) told me to feed the chooks garlic on the full moon... it has always worked for us... we have never used a commercial wormer though...
Not helpful to your sick chicken but just wanted to share re the worms... Cheers Sal.Posted 2 years ago # -
Rotten news Laura, Do hope she recovers from whatever it is . I have never wormed my hens but do put garlic cloves in the water and also apple cider vinegar when in moult . Best wishes ,Mama
Goose GirlPosted 2 years ago # -
Im going to give her garlic in the water-only problem if I put garlic in the water the ducks bath in it.....
Thank you guys.
xxxPosted 2 years ago # -
maybe just a shallow dish with water in it so the ducks dont want to hace swims....

Laura , It might be better to have a seperate water feeder for your chickens , the ones that they can only get their beaks in . Don't know if you already have them but they are not expensive and the garlic stays in until you refil the container. Good luck . Mama

You havnt met my ducks-anything anywhere can be bathed in and splashed around/paddled/bathed in. Lol. They are water babies. They have 1 pond and 2 containers-and they use them all! Poor chickens-have to drink bath water all the time-even the proper drinkers-paddle in them, Ive gave up. Lol. xPosted 2 years ago # -
A chick drinker with a small rim around the outer edge. My ducks would only drink from it now if there was no other water around as the size of rim is specifically for chicks and ducklings.
Sarah LPosted 2 years ago # -
I shall invesest in one of those anti paddling drinkers and pop some garlic cloves in it and make sure there is no other water for them to drink once every couple of days so they have to drink the garlic infused water.
Thank youPosted 2 years ago # -
ok as i know nothing about chickens whats the garlic and vinigar for

Hi Laura,
You can get an organic wormer called Verm-X which I have used. no withdrawal on eggs.
Best Wishes

Hi Sara
Would this work immediatley if I gave it to Pookey when I get in?? Or is it too late for the poor little soul?
ThanksPosted 2 years ago # -
We give our chickens garlic for worms... they love it.. they always have other water but it is like they know it makes them feel better - for some reason we were told to do it with the full moon - not sure why but it does the trick..
We dosed our quails and have had no more die since...
Cheers

Mo, Garlic is said to be a natural wormer and the cider vinegar is said to be a good general tonic for all fowl especially when in moult . My geese get a dose of it in a bucket about 1 a month . Mama

Laura, I put my waterer on a brick or breeze block so that the birds cannot scratch dirt into it . Mama

just wondering if you popped home and how things are
mo xPosted 2 years ago # -
Hi Mo,
I couldnt pop home because my lunch was 1.45-2.30 and I had to have my stupid flu jab at work at 2.10.........
I keep thinking about her all the time, and praying she will be ok. I just want to get home and give her some wormer and sugared water. And give her a clean since she is very muddy. My poor little PookeyPosted 2 years ago # -
Hello Laura
So sorry to here about your little pookey. I hope things will start looking up for her. You can get flubenvet wormer as well, but I do not know if it is suitable for chicks or not. Sorry I cannot help more. I will pray that pookey will feel better.
Love

Hi Guys
Some of you may have seen my comment I put on facebook, Pookey is still here and fighting. She still cant stand but can move her legs, she still has lots of strength as when I was poking a worm pellet in her beak she wouldnt open it! But eventually got one in then she gobbled some down herself. I sat in the house last night with her and she was fascinated by the tv and sat there happily. Usually she would protest against any hugging!
But she is eating and drinking, pooping and looking alert just not standing :o(
Any more ideas or should I be patient for the worm pelleted food to kick in. Also I am giving her garlic infused water.
Thanks guys for caring. xxPosted 2 years ago # -
Well that does sound a bit better, but worried about her not standing. Don't think you can do anymore than you are doing , she is getting plenty of tlc. Best wishes Mama
Goose GirlPosted 2 years ago # -
I would be patient, she sounds a little improved and if its trauma, then with rest she will improve over the next few days and the same if its worms, so you may not know which it was. Any more trouble from the big cockeral?
Sarah LPosted 2 years ago # -
i never knew worms could do this much harm, if thats what it is, hope she gets better soon for you x
mo xPosted 2 years ago # -
I hope so, fingers crossed!! Im unsure if it was Fido that did anything, I hope he wouldnt hurt them but he does chase them, the other two little guys-Nermal and Garfield are fine, he hasnt done anything to them. Poor Pookey-unlucky I guess!! I wormed all the other feathers today too!! Just in case eh! But if it happens again I know its Fido then im afraid he shall have to find a new home if he cant be nice to the chicks
