OK - so the eggs have been stood up and tilted 90deg throughout incubation - now it is time to hatch - one is in the air sack BUT they wont be able to hatch in the current 'box' setup so I need to put in the mesh for them to hatch on BUT thayt will mean they are not standing up.... should the eggs be put on their SIDE?? FREAKING out... HELP... I could cut an egg carton so they could remain standing up but will this make it harder for them to hatch??

the question is SHOULD they stay standing up OR be placed ont their SIDE?

Will changing it now much up their hatching as they may already be 'in position especially the one that has already broken the air sack?

Should I be spraying them with water? I have increased the humidity to 65-70 percent..

I rememer the stress of last time now.. :(

  5. Hi Sal,
Yes I just put the eggs on their sides on the wire mesh in the incubator and have water in the trays below for humidity. I didn't spray mine but then only managed to hatch 7 and I had to help 6 of them. This was the duck eggs I got from York rare breeds sale and from ebay and this was 2 years ago!
I know that some recommend spraying in the last few days.
Good luck. I know that stressed feeling I am sure we all feel it at incubation time!

    Hi Everyone,

I have spent the day at Uni studying for my exam which is on at 9am tomorrow morning - nothing much has happened with the eggs - still only 2 in the airsack but they are moving about tapping at the shell - but no pipping yet... Will let you know if and when anything changes.
    cheers

I had a panic attack with mine, I had seen an article saying that they should be sitting up on their pointy ends then I was told that in the nest they would be on their side. They seemed to have no trouble hatching on their sides. The first ones started making noises but didn't pip for a few hours later, then another few hours to get out of the shell. Good luck with the babies and with the exam!

OMG I missed all this. On their sides is fine, in the airsac for 2 days is fine, then they pip then they hatch. Its all good, Im nervous for you!! Hehehe, good luck with your exam, concentrate on your work not your new babies, which I know will be impossible. Eeeeeeeeee exciting for you!!!! xxx

Sorry to have missed this excitement. Yes the eggs are definitely fine on their sides. I sprayed mine about 1 every hour or so from when they had pipped. Once they have pipped they will still take quite a while to come out, up to 24 hours or more. When they have made a hole and a little beak is sticking out, you could give that beak a little cooled boiled water using a small pipette if you have one or a wet cotton bud. the membrane under the shell gets really dry, so try and wet that a bit as the hole appears. After they've made the hole they should be out within 5- 10 hours, if one is really taking alot longer you may have to help it out of the shell, but be really careful and only pick away small pieces around the head, leaving it to get out once you think it can on its own (usually it can when it has it's wings out). Keep the hatched duckling in the incubator until it is totally dry and fluffy, it will be fine for a good few hours without any food or water then. Then you can transfer it to the brooder showing it the food and water. I put a mirror in with my first one so that he didn't feel so lonely.
Any more help, just ask. Oh and by the way hope the exam went OK!!
