Hi, I am a total newcomer with ducks. We have an ornamental lake with an island with a nesting box and we have been given a pair of freeranging friendly Muscovys. The female is happily laying an egg a day in the box and her and the male seem to spend a little time each day, and most of the night, I think, sitting in there.
Will these eggs hatch? Or should I remove the eggs in case they go off? I thought the duck would have to sit on them 24/7 except to feed, for them to hatch? Any advice would be appreciated,we would be happy to have ducklings but dont want a box of rotting eggs!

hi Deb, welcome to the forum, how many eggs so far? your duck will continue laying eggs daily until shes happy she has enough, then if she is going to brood them she will begin the long 28 days sit in, i'm not sure how many is normal in your breed but some ducks can lay 12 or more eggs before they begin sitting on them, so if you are happy to have ducklings i would leave them where they are and keep your fingers crossed, good luck

Hello Deb,
I am from America and don't have ducks of my own- but I enjoy very much the ones that visit my yard from the lake across the street.
You can learn a bunch from browsing around this forum. Just about every question and situation will be found here and you will find the group is so very helpful and friendly.
Sally is hatching some Cayuga duck eggs in an incubator- as we speak- and it is all so exciting!

Hi, and thanks for replying, we have 7 eggs so far and looking out window I can see her sitting in box, so probably 8. I will leave them alone and hopefully she will do what ducks do! The wild mother duck and 11 3 week old ducklings are living happily here as well and they are cleaning up left over feed each day, As a novice owner I am enjoying there antics and watching them all interacting!
Thanks again for any replies

How nice for you Deb, to be able to have a 'ring side seat' as they 'do what ducks do' on your lake! What enjoyment that must be for you.
Wishing you all the best with them. Do be sure to 'surf' around this forum for stories and such from the others as they have shared different and wonderful stories of their lots -mostly ducks, but other poultry as well.
Blessings,
