    Hi everyone

Unfortunately, at the weekend we lost one of our chickens - some fencing fell and crushed her to death. That is sad enough, but now her buddy and the last remaining of our original flock of chickens seems to be in morning. She is standing on her own all the time, her tail is down and she just looks sad. She stayed up on the perches this morning when all the others came out for their breakfast, and I am worried that we will lose her.
Does anyone have any ideas on how we can cheer her up (so to speak).
    Thanks as always

  3. Hi Karen,
So sorry for the loss of your hen, how terrible.I don't have experience of this, I would suggest lots time spent with the hen if that is possible and like Mo says treats. Keep her warm as she may be in shock. Did the hen look like the hen you lost? If so then how about a mirror for the hen to look into, may make her think the other hen is around. I know that guinea fowl look in mirrors and think there is another bird.I wonder if giving her some poultry spice or tonic will pep her up!
    Hope she perks up soon.

    Hi Sara

The mirror is a fab idea. They looked just like each other so i will find one to put out in the morning. I have just checked her and she was underneath the perches instead of on them. We have poulty tonic too so will give them all some of that in the morning.

It has been a tough six months for her, as we lost 4 of her buddies, and after PM's our vet told us he is sure there must be something stressing them out. Turned out it was Coolio the cockeral we bought at the same time (he was v rough with them), so we gave him to a neighbour and the remaining two original hens took over the flock. Now her buddy is gone I think she is sad and has also been demoted in the pecking order.

Thanks Mo for your response.. fingers crossed she will snap out of it and start bossing the others around again.

    Hi Karen
Sorry about your hen's death that must have been traumatic to see for you all. I was trying to send a message earlier but something was wrong with laptop. I hope that she will brighten up soon, that is good advice already given, I had thought about the treats too and giving her some special attention. Poor hen has been through a lot with losing her friends.

  6. Hi Karen, so sorry to hear about your chicken, maybe you could adopt a ex battery hen and give her a good home. The hen that is left may go off lay, even go into a moult, this happens after they go into shock

    Hi there

I would be quite happy if she goes off lay and moults, as am concerned she may have peritonitis caused by the shock. At the weekend I tried her with her favourites of sweetcorn, mashed potato, cabbage leaves all to no avail. She is very light and weak now and not eating or drinking. I have moved her into the garage with the chicks (but in a seperate area) in the hope she will return to her normal bossy self and tell the youngsters what to do. I really do hope she starts feeding again - I have dipped her beak in water with tonic and she has no interest.
Will keep you updated, and thanks for all the replies.

    Morning..

We lost the chicken. I had put her under the heat lamp yesterday and she had perked up a bit, but I could see she then started to decline again. Feel gutted as if I had acted sooner I might have saved her.

    Hi Karen
I know exactly how you feel, I rescued 4 batts, 2 of which were thick as thieves-Boogle and Munch, Boogle went missing-I was gutted-tried to find her, still dont know what happened? I think someone stole her! And Munch went into depression, Munch was the one who always came upto me first, always into everything first. She was heartbroken that her buddy had gone. She never recovered, she went like you said your hen did, looked depressed, didnt eat or drink, just stayed in the same spot, no matter what I did. Nothing could help her, she died of a broken heart.
Its so sad, but think of all the good you have done, I think about mine I have lost, if I hadnt have saved them they would have never known a happy life, when I saved them they had never ever been outside in all their lives. They were so happy. Dont be sad, think of the good times. They will have loved you for making them happy.
    Lots of hugs. xxxx

    Hi PinkPoultry
Sorry to hear you lost two birds aswell, but thank you for sharing your story with me as it reassures me that perhaps she would have died anyway, whether or not I had done anything differently or sooner.

    Laura,

That is so sweet of you to share your story about your birds. That is such a sweet attitude to have and such comforting words to dollydylo.

It must be a comfort knowing that you loved them and gave them a good life for as long as you could.

    Blessings to you both,
    Dottie
