My hens have not laid for nearly a month now, bad light and cold weather no doubt the reason.
But when i mentioned it to my sister, she said a friend of hers gave hers warm mash every day and she had laying hens, so, i started mine with a tub of layers mash + 1tsp poultry spice stirred up with warm water, they loved it, and after 1 week of this i,m getting eggs again.
So they must be happier
Try it !

Hi Sarah,
Thanks for sharing this. My ducks seem to have gone off lay so may give it a go! My hens are still laying though!
Best wishes

I used layers mash and added some poultry spice, it smells nice and gives them extra vitamins and parasite protection

What is this poultry spice? What does it do and can I give it to my ducks too?? x

its a natural powder, made from spices, herbs etc, its very good for them vitamins minerals etc about £5 for a 450 gm tub from most good animal foodstores and country stores. and you only need to give out 1 teaspoon per 10 birds per day so it lasts ages, i reckon it'd be fine for ducks too as it is called poultry spice not chicken spice, they just started a new one called poultry zest but i dont know much about that one

Well the shortes day is the 21st December, so they will come back into lay as soon as the day light begins to lengthen.
The only thing with household mash is that the amout they have to consume is 10 times the amount for manufactured feed.
To get the same amount in nutritional valueYou can put hot water into poultry food to make it warm for them.

Hi Vernon
You can buy a layers mash for hens at the agricultural suppliers. I gave it to the ducks at first before I changed to pellets. It is good possibly for the winter when it is colder as you can put warm water in it. I was getting food for ducks earlier in the week and noticed the poultry spice, but I buy the battles poultry drink.Best Wishes

why not just put some pellets in a grinder/blender. we all have pellets.
A local pet store sells the spice for £7.95 so I won't be going there!Sarah LPosted 2 years ago #
