Chick's egg tooth broken off

Hi, Hope you are all getting ready for a great Christmas, I have some baby chicks that hatched yesterday and one of them pipped but after 24 hrs we helped it. It was still alive but I noticed that its egg tooth was broken off so that the lower beak was longer than the top - may explain why it didn't get out? Also it is not doing very well, keeps curling up in a ball and can't stand up but it has been trying to for about 4 hours so I have cuddled it to let it be upright in my hand and not let its head curl down to its belly.

Any ideas on what I should do? I am keeping it in the incubator for a bit longer as it only hatched out 5 hours ago.

Hi Ursula, Sorry to hear about your chick. I had one born with the same thing but not in an incubator. It survived and grew into a healthy bird. Think you are doing the right thing by keeping it in the incy , sorry can't suggest any thing else. Perhaps you could give the chick some water with a bit of sugar in it .Hope all goes well and have a good christmas. Mama

I would get some food and water into it to give it strength and keep it warm either in the incubator or about your person. I tucked my poorly duckling into my bra. You can get on with other stuff and keep an eye at the same time.
    Hope it pulls through.

Thanks guys - poor little thing will drink water if I dip its beak in a lid of water, hasn't wanted any chick starter. I've been carrying it with me to keep it happy - it just falls on its side and scrabbles and cheeps unless I hold it. Don't know about the bra though! But I think there is something else wrong as it can't stay upright, it just wants to curl up. Its such a shame as it has a lot of energy and makes a huge amount of noise but doesn't have proper head control.

What a Christmas Day! Have a good one, I'll let you know how he/she goes.

My husband suggested I experiment with chicken chiropractic on its neck - don't worry I wont be doing that! I did give it a little massage around the head and neck which it didn't seem to mind. I thought it might have gone funny while being stuck in the egg in the curled up position for so long. Anyway, I will keep trying but I am not hopeful.

Keeping you and the baby in my prayers. Just keep loving it, that's the very best you can do no matter what happens.

Hi, sad news for little chickie, we had a good look at its head and neck and something was not right, back of its head was all soft instead of bony like the others and the eyes were not set evenly, so my husband despatched it to chick heaven, it was the kindest thing we could do.

Hope you all had a great Christmas with not too much snow. Saw on the news how bad the weather is up your end of the world! Had to drive to Sydney for family dinner, it was cool and raining a bit, which was nice over a big roast dinner.
