    Hello All,
I have a female quail currently hatching eight eggs. The first chick i found dead away from the nest. Second egg should be hatching by my calculations, tonight.

Problem is, i have in the aviary both father and the son (from a previous hatching ) and i cannot tell which is which. I suspect the chick died at the hands of the son. I should have identified the son before its maturity. The father is a brilliant parent and care giver.

Is there anyway to identify father from son so i can seperate and only leave mother and father in the bottom of the aviary?

Hi, Only thing I can think of is to put a marker on one of the males and watch carefully. If you see one going for the chicks then at least you know if it is marked or unmarked. May be an idea to separate the mum and babies from both males to avoid further casualties.

    Best of luck.

Thanks Sallie, thats a great idea regarding the marker. I will keep the two males seperated and then release them both and stay and watch their activity.

    Thanks for your imput, Regards.

  4. Hi Loudoun,
Welcome to the farmingfriends forum. I keep quail too. I would definately separate the two males until the chicks are old enough to look after themselves. Quail are mature at 6 weeks so we don't have that long to wait!
    Good luck with the hatch.
    Kind regards
