Older Guinea Fowl Gasping

(10 posts)

  1. Hi All,
I have had some of my guinea fowl for nearly 7 years and one of the females is gulping and gasping. Does anyone know what the illness maybe?
Guinea fowl tend to be quite disease free and resilient. not sure if it's the wet under foot that has got to her or old age. Wonder if it was gape worm as I think this can make them gasp. If anyone has seen this in guinea fowl let me know.
I am hoping it's not Camilla the guinea fowl, hard to tell as she was left on her own and wasn't wandering around with Charlie and Diana! This royal trio are my original guinea fowl that I was given in 2004.
Wondering if garlic in the water or apple cider vinegar in water may help. Will worm them as well with VermX incase it's worms.
    Thanks

Really sorry to hear that Sara. I know this sounds really obvious but do you know of any exotic vets around your area that you could phone for advice? If you want I can give you the number of our guy. He is the head Scottish wildlife vet-works for SPCA & also the safari parks. He is difficult to pin down but is so caring & will know what the prob is!

  5. Dear Mama, Lorna and Yan,
Thanks for all your kind words and help. Unfortunately the guinea fowl didn't make it. On the whole my guinea fowl seem to be very resilient and illness free but when they do get ill they seem to go quickly.
Thanks for the link Lorna, a useful site for guinea fowl info.
Thanks Yan for the offer of your vets number.
I am not sure what it was that the guinea fowl had. I will check my books for those symptoms. I couldn't get her to take a drink, so whatever the illness was it had taken hold. At least she didn't suffer for long.
The other guinea fowl are quite kind when one of their own is ill and they don't pick on them like hens and pigs do!
    Best Wishes

Oh Sara so sorry! You'll just feel terrible! Maybe it was just old age? Don't know how old they can get to. As you said at least it was quick xx
