Hi my son has a homemade incubator and we have 3 sebastapol goose eggs in it as well as 15 polish chicken eggs. The temp is roughly 37.7C and humidity ranges from 60% to 68%. The incubator has a fan and my son has been turning the eggs 3 times a day. I am able to candle the hen eggs easily and after 9 days can see all 15 are fertilized and lots of blood vessels. The goose eggs are another story and our problem I believe 2 are fertilized as they have very dark patches to one side, 1 is very dark over 3/4 of egg and can't see through it, the third I can see straight through it and the yolk is moving about. Does anyone know if these eggs have a chance and if its worth keeping the 3rd in incubator? My son is only 7yrs and so I want to help him be as successful as possible. We do have a pet house duck but we bought her last year as aduckling so know nothing about hatching.
Thanks Colette

Hi Colette
I've never tried geese, but I have hatched ducklings, last August, so I'll try and remember. I think if it is dark all the way through, it may not be viable, if the other one's moving, it may be ok. I would keep them in the incubator for now. And I hope that someone who knows a little more will be able to help soon.

Hi Rachel
Thanks I will keep them a while longer and see. Scared to do anything in case they are viable and scared if I leave them they might burst over the polish ones. didn't realize letting him hatch his own would completely take over all our lives but it has and is great and stressful at same time!!!

Hi Colette,
Welcome to the farmingfriends forum. How lovely that your son is interested in incubating the eggs in a homemade incubator.
I would say that if you don't think the 3rd eggs is rotten then I would be inclined to leave it in the incubator to see what happens. I don't have experience of incubating goose eggs so I am sorry I can't be more helpful.
Good luck with the hatching.
kind regards

Poor you Colette, am so sorry I cannot help. I have hatched goslings or should I say mama goose did so no help at all .I did candle the eggs and a couple of days before they seemed to fill the egg with a tiny air gap and could also see movement . If you do hatching again it may be better not to hatch different breeds together as it is said they do need different humidity and temps. I so hope it goes well for you and your little boy . Best wishes Mama .PS we all understand stressful !!!

Hi Colette, i would keep them in the incubator for a few more days ,as for #3 if you can just see the yolk this might not be firtile, but give it a few more days you might be lucky, have you googled candleling geese eggs there might be some photos, i am not too sure if the humidity is, the same for chickens and geese egg, good luck sorry i could not be of more help sure someone who has incubated goose eggs will help out,

Hi Sara
Thanks, yes i think it's gonna be good for him, it's the list of what he wants to hatch that getting bigger though lol. I'll leave them a few more days and check again. The polish chicken eggs seem to be coming on well so hopefully 1 goose will hatch. I have added you on fb so if he's successful he can upload some pics.
Thanks again and you'll prob be sick of hearing from us cause it is all new :-)

Hi mama and Lisa
Thanks for the advice. Yes I now realize they are all different :(. I have youtubed candling goose eggs, but when I'm doing it the shell seems so thick can hardly see anything, last night I think I saw blood vessels on the first 2 but they were very dark over most of the egg, the air cell I can see. The 3rd really nothing so might not be fertile. So different to the thin shell of chicken eggs, we can actually see embryo moving in them. It's amazing!!! Will keep a post on how they are progressing and if he has any luck post some pics.
Thanks again everyone

hi
unfortunately the egg i wasnt too sure about finally had a smell comimg from it, so i have removed it. The other egg is due to hatch next weekend and i candled it last night. I use the led flashlight on my mobile (lol works fantastic lol). I can see lots of veins and the dark area, when i was about to stop candling as no movement my phone beeped, at that the gosling began moving fingers crossed only a week to go.
