I have two broody female ducks. They have been sharing 1 nest that now only consists of 2 eggs. they started off with about 8 and gradually killed off the eggs. I have purchased 4 ducklings in the off chance 1 of them may latch on to them. What is the best way to introduce them tho the ducklings. And would i be better removing the 2 eggs? Or separating the females up and giving them 2 ducklings each ?

    Thanks

  2. hello first I have to ask what you mean by killed off the eggs, as to should you remove the eggs are your girls actually incubating them yet,and my girls always lay in the same nest anyway
as to your introduction what age are the ducklings you have brought, you need to put them where they can see each other for a few days and then put them together to see how they get on but they will just be extra ducks your girls won't be mums to them

my ducklings are 10 days old today. My two girls are extremely broody and fight over the eggs, due to this they stand on them when trying to steal them from each other. I need a resolution as my girls have been sitting for a month now and are extremely skinny as they are devoting them selfs to these remainding eggs. i had hoped that even 1 may fall for these little ducklings.

    Thank

Hello,Another option is if your girls are truly broody, and the ducklings are very young . Put them under mums after dark and remove the eggs at the same time .If the next morning they haven't accepted the ducklings then you will have to follow Mo's advice and try an introduce them slowly. You don't say how long they have been sitting and did they break the other eggs ?,Mama

Yeah they broke them by accident cz they are so protective over them. It is rather funny watching 1 gradually pull one out the other nest They also leave the nest ast different times during the day!

    Thanks

  6. then if they are like that and if the last 2 eggs stand a chance you will have to seperate the girls for a while only one can incubate and the other one will get over it but you still have to introduce them slowly to the ducklings at 10 days old they wont fool your girls into thinking they are theirs, and all new ducks should really be kept apart until you know there are no health issues with the new ones

We must have been typing at the same time Kerry, think Mo has said it all and hope you can help your girls that have been sitting for a month now. They will be exhausted and at the end of their normal sitting time . Mama
