Hi,
I have 11 button Quails 5 males, and 6 hens - there is one little white hen, who is being picked on by the males and pecked during mating - she spends all day trying to run and hide from them. The others dont have the same problem - we have separated her with another hen for company, but she paces up and down, as do the males - help? Should I get rid of her - I feel so so sad for her

Hi Bexter,
Welcome to the farmingfriends forum. The recommended amount of males to females is 1 male to about 6 females, so if you can either get more females or less males this may help.
If you got rid of her the males would just turn their attention to another female. they are picking on her as she is probably the lowest in the pecking order, if she is smaller than the other females then this would be why, she would be an easy target to mate with.
Kind regards

It sounds like too many males as Sara says. You only need one - if that.

1 male anything is enough, I have had to seperate my 2 drakes and 3 ducks permanently, the more girls the better but mine are quite content now as a trio and a couple

what do you do when you let them all out though Mo? do they fight or just play nice and swim nice etc?

can't let them out together at all now, they sleep in 2 pens in a large shed and they have a pen each in the garden with a pool each and have to take it in turns in the garden, bit more work for me but worth it for the calm we now have

Would anybody want 4 button males? Surely the hens are more desirable/useful? Thanks so much for all that advice, I have separated my little white hen now with another hen for company, who was slightly pecking her, but seem to have calmed down now. So complicated! Being mother of 11 B.Qs!

I don't know I have read a lot on diff forums that they keep only males of birds (deco for garden)
I don't know for quails though, but someone may need some to breed with :)
