I have read that Pekin ducks do not have any brooding instinct, but I have one who is sitting on 20+ eggs. I don't know what to do, whether I should leave things alone or remove some or all of the eggs. Will she keep laying; will she hatch them or give up; will she know how to raise them if they hatch?

Hello Pekin, If your duck is still laying she is not broody and when she is she will no longer lay. 20 are to many for any duck to cover properly and hatch. You would be best to remove some of the eggs and wait and see what happens

Thanks for the speedy response...much appreciated. I will attempt to determine which if any of the eggs are developing, and leave those in the nest, then monitor progress after.

  6. Hi All,
What is the usual clutch size for a pekin duck, is it 6-12 eggs or is it more like 20?
Someone has asked and I am not sure. I would have thought they would lay anywhere from about 6-12 but then I believe they are a big duck so maybe it's more.
    Thanks
    Kind regards

But their eggs are bigger too so they can only cover roughly the same amount of eggs.
Is she sitting all the time and only coming out 2/3 times a day for food and water? Does her nest have a high edge so you can only see the top of her when she's in it?

On the contrary, Pekin ducks are very reliable brooders. Hope all goes well.

Hi Sara ,To me doesn't matter how big the hen or duck or goose is .As Sarah says The number of eggs should still be about the same as the eggs are much bigger and I would not think any fowl could hatch 20 . Even ostriches don't hatch a lot and they are huge so are the eggs . Mama

Thanks, campbell ridge for your input. The nest is in a little house which sits on a raft in a pond, so it's difficult to see her, but she appears to be sitting on the nest almost full-time now. I removed 8 eggs a few days ago. They were all from the outer edge of the nest and all appeared to have a visible red ring when candled. I couldn't reach any of the others, so I'm hoping they are doing better.

Hi again. Well, nature took it's course, as they say, and I now have 7 new ducklings! Thanks everyone for your advice.
