Hi Everyone, I am new here, and wondered if anyone can help me. We have 2 chickens one cock and 2 baby chicks about 3 months old now, (we have lost a lot to predators).

A week ago my son saw what he thought was a white baby chicken on the road very distressed, he put it in his pocket and cycled home, the poor thing looked 'threadbare' and shivering, so we got our cat cage and put a warm old jumper in there with lots of kitchen roll on top, some water and bread, he sat with Joshy for a long while, we reckon but not sure he must be about 3 weeks old now, he sat with our guinea pig as well cuddled up to him, obviously thought he was his mum!

After a week he seems a lot better but wants to get out more which I can understand, much more lively, after giving him lettuce and scrambled egg and special food we got from an animal place.

My question is, what do we do with him now? we can't keep him in the cage for much longer, we took him outside and introduced him to our chicken GiGi, but she gave him a few pecks other then that she wasnt too bothered about him, but I can't introduce the Keet to the rest as the cock is horrible and vicious (to us anyway) so what to do with him???

The other question is he seems to have this yellow swelling at the side of his neck, any ideas?

Hope someone would be able to give me some advice as to what to do.

    Thanks very much.

PS I do have some pics.

  2. Hi Jilly,
I am not sure about the yellow swelling. Does the cockerel roost with the hens? Can you introduce the guinea gradually to your hens as I have hens and guinea fowl that live togther at night and free range during the day, infact one of my hens has sat on some guinea eggs and hatched one off and so she is mum and the guinea follows her around. If it is a female guinea fowl then there won't be too much of a problem with the cockerel the problem would be if he was a male.
I will send you my email address so I can get the photos on to the forum.
    kind regards
