    Hi Guys!
As some of you know Sausage-my chocolate campbell, decided to sit on some eggs, I candled them last night and all 12 that she is sitting on are all fertile and growing! I keep having to remove fresh eggs as Plum my runner goes in and lays her egg in there each day. So in around 2 weeks...I will have some little duckies! 12 is an insane amount but I know not all will hatch then not all will survive, these are hatched to order so I have 3 people who want them when they are born, they are all local and friends so I can trust them to be nice to them. (you know what im like!)
Just thought I would update you on her!
Oh and another thing, every single night I keep having dreams that the ducklings are hatched and I keep losing them and trying to find them as they are hiding all around the garden.....Oh dear.

Ha ha, I love my duck names, im going to have to think of 12 names if they all hatch, I want to call one Sprout, and one Oilspot if one of Pye's is hatched all white with a little black spot somewhere on it...But dunno about the others, Im sure I shall think of something (Pye is a Magpie Duck and the baby will be crossed with a white campbell-HUGE duck!) Cant wait for me babieeees!! xx

I can think of a name for your 12 ducklings, if you name them all QUACK then when you call them you will sound just like them !

    Hi Laura,

My magpie call ducks I guess have been crossed with white call ducks and they are primarily white with just light black spots. The wee drake is better coloured than the female. Mine are very wild for call ducks I have been a bit surprised they are very nervous.

Checked on the eggs this morning and there was a dead duckling, completly hatched, still wet but dead. :o( Sausage is a new Mam so do you think she didnt realise and suffocated it? I cant find the shell that it came out of either. There is an egg that has externally pipped so maybe a duckling later, going to keep my eye on her so she doesnt squash it. Maybe she didnt but you never know. xx

    Hi Laura ,
It's unlikely she squashed it. It could be she pulled the shell off and in the process tore out the umbilica/yolk sac so the duckling perished. An examination of the dead duckling would confirm this, or she may have killed it herself or are there any other ducks in with her that might have done so?

No one else can her in her house where the eggs are. :o( It was a pretty little yellow one. I shall keep a close eye, if this happens again I shall take the rest of the eggs and put then in the incubator. The yolk sac was still attached to the little guy

Well after that little one this morning, i got in from work and there is an egg with hardly any shell and just the membrane (white bit inside then the other membrane inside that) with a bit of blood, the duckling inside was moving, I have taken it out and put it in the incubator, I cant see its beak and its not moving anymore. Have I left it too late, is the little thing dead? I hope not. But I dont see any movement at all, no noises either.
What would you do? Would you take the rest of her eggs and put them in the incubator? I have other eggs I can replace them with and then put the ducklings back when they have hatched?
    Im so stressed again!

  13. Maybe the duckling might not be moving cos it could be exhausted. I remeber watching my little chicks hatch and one of them just half hatched and after a long while there was no movement or sound, so I ended up helping it out and later it was completely fine thank God!
Maybe its best to put them in the incubator and then once they are hatched return them to the mother duckling to bring them up? Or maybe cos 12 is quite a lot of a first time mother duckling so maybe just take a few to the inccy? Hope it all works out for you!
    Good luck!!

There are 9 eggs left now. That one with the squashed egg died. Poor thing, I have taken the rest of her eggs and put them in the incubator, I have 2 beaks cheeping and sticking out this morning which is good news. I have put some other eggs under her so she isnt looking for them, once they are hatched I shall put them under her to see if she accepts them, or I might just raise them seperatly. I dont know? I feel so guilty because she has lost 2, i think she just doesnt know what she is doing and is accidentally killing them.

You could try putting one or two in with her but you must be watchful in case she IS killing them and whip them out again if she shows any aggression whatsoever.

Im at work during the day so I dont want to leave them. So if one has hatched tonight I shall put it in with her but keep an eye on her, if she is harming them then obviously I shall put them in the brooder well away where they are safe.

AWWWWWWWWWWWW!!! As some of you may already know....I got in from work and there is one little fluffy duckling-bright yellow! The cutest little guy on the planet!! (this one is Cherry Valley x White Campbell) And there was one about to come out of its egg (Trout Indian Runner x White Campbell) and then popped out right in front of my eyes! Aww, it was amazing!! I havnt ever seen a duckling just pop out by himself like that. This one has a little brown cap and yellow belly & wings then brown on the back, then pink feet with brown splodges-sooo cute! So anyways, I went outside with the ducklings and fed the big guys so Sausage came off her nest, I popped the babies in the nest and then waited, Sausage was scoffing then herd cheeping, she ran straight into the house (I was very nervous at this point!) so I was peeping in the duck house, and Sausage stood there, in what looked like pure disbelief, nuzzled her babies very gentally then sat down beside them and got them under her wings. She is a great Mam now! I think maybe she tried to help them out the shell and hurt them, but once they are out-perfect! I was nervous and kept checking but they are all doing just fine :o) I let Plum in to have a look as Plum and Sausage are always together, and she was fine too. But I have put Plum out as Im at work for the day.
So good news people! Just waiting for the other little guys to pop out! x

i am sure Plum will be ok to leave with her but that is for you to decide later when you get back home and can watch them.
Good luck with the rest :)

Had 3 babies hatch yesterday!!!!!!!!! And I put them under Sausage this morning, so there are now 5 ducklings, she loves them, and there should be another one hatched when I get home from work today, then just 2 eggs left! Wow how stressful, thought it was supposed to be easy the duck doing it, but she is a newbie, she wasnt to know what to do. Bless her xx

I presume she is off the nest now and busy caring for her youngsters, if not then she is probably ok to take finish off the other eggs. I wonder why they are so many days apart?

Well the new ones are quite young so she is always cooching them under her wings, another is pipping today. Campbell Ridge-they are far apart because Plum the little monkey was secretly laying eggs in the nest once Sausage started sitting, I didnt realise because Sausage so so worked up (nearly made me cry she was so stressed) so I didnt count/mark her eggs for 2 weeks from when she first started sitting, she still breaths heavy at me but doesnt go totally nuts like she used too.
Both Brussel and Sprout have been in the pond and they do such a funny thing, Im trying to get a video, they swim around really really fast, then make a peep noise then disappear under the water and then pop up a few seconds later at the other end of the pond, they keep doing this for quite a while, then hop out, crazy little fellas, it must be duckling safety! at first I got a fright as to where the little guy had gone, then saw him pop up, haha. it makes me giggle even writing about it!! x

yes its quite amazing their underwater skills at such a young age. I remember one of mine zipping underwater when they were just a couple of days old, her mother wondered where she had gone and then she popped up on the other side of her! lol
