  2. if it was in the yolk its possible it was a fertile egg that had begun to develope, I have some like that but throw them away, they may be ok but dont fancy using them myself x

Euuggghhh, sounds gross! I always collect mine straight away as I have a fear of cracking open a half grown duckling-dramatic yes but I dunno.....scary.
Did you take a pic? (Not that I particularly want to see :-S )

  4. I collect mine straight away but makes no difference unless they are kept somewhere cold, which isnt easy if you dont want to keep them in the fridge, which I now do for this reason x

    For Rhonda,

It's called chalaza, it's normal and indicates a really good quality, fresh egg :) I pull mine out as it can be a bit stringy but it's just protein.

  6. oh I see that it never bothers me, thats not what I was on about though I was thinking more about the grey on the yolk which I was told on here was the start of an embryo

I guess it must be, but I have never seen a grey bit. just the white dot. I suppose if they have been warmed a bit by a duck bum then they may be into day 2 of incubation

  8. cant find the photo not sure if it was on here or fb it was you Sarah who told me it was that but it hadnt been under a duck bum lol it was the hot summer last year and was in a bowl in my kitchen, since then they are kept in the fridge, shame i can't find the photo to go with yours they would be handy for members if they see strange eggs, although there is a link to a good artical on strange eggs on the forum already

    Hi,
Last month Charity laid a very small black egg, it was very rough on the outside and when opened it looked just like a very small cooked egg yolk. As far as I know that is the only 'egg' she has laid this year,I brought her inside and she had a wee rest and was fine.

Thanks for the replies, im not convinced it was chalaza because it was much harder than the images of chalaza ive seen, about 2cm long and 0.5cm thick. you could physically pick it up. wish id taken a pick now... anyways i made muffins with it.... and they didnt kill me..lol

It wouldnt be anything else but chalaza if you have no cockerel. It just proves your ducks are very healthy :)
