I have just read what Sara wrote on another quail post that they like hiding, and to get some straw and sticks to make a shelter, maybe fill plant pots on their side with straw, I do that my chickens and ducks and they like rooting around seeing what is about. Hang up some things for them, like lettuce or a cabbage for them to peck at?

Haha ok i'll take some pics, they are not realllly white but more like the ones in the photo on this other quail post, maybe a bit lighter, and I've got heaps of hiding spots, and it is a big rabbit cage so theres a nesting area type thing to :) One of the "females" keeps making crowing noises every time I go to feed them so I'm starting to think I might have 2 boys and a girl though the brown one may be a girl.....

  7. Hi Jz,
You can let decide if you want them to make a nest and sit on the eggs to hatch them or if you are going to take the egg away. Quail eggs are very tasty. i love them hard boiled with a salad.
    Kind regards

Hello :) The female sat on the egg for a while (like an hour) then got bored and left it till it was to long gone to save (I was really upset :( I kinda want some babies, how could I raise the eggs without a incubator? The reason I got the quail to lay was I got a stone that was in the perfect shape of a quail egg and heated it over the jug then left it to cool for a while then put it in there nesting box and 2 mins later I had an egg, no kidding!!!

  10. Hi Jz,
It depends, if you can get the quail to sit then she will make the hatching and raising of the chicks so much easier. She may not be sitting as she only has 3 eggs so far, so will probably not want to sit until she has 8 or so eggs.
Hatching in an incubator can be more difficult and then there is alot more work afterwards as you have to raise the chicks.
You could keep the eggs with her and wait till she has laid some more.
It also depends on the time of year it is with you, here in the UK we are heading into Autumn so now is not a good time for us to get a bird to sit as it's gettting colder etc
    Good luck whatever you decide.
    Kind regards

Hi, JZ. I have found that 10 days is about the max for collecting quail eggs for the incubator although the longer left the less the success rate, so you still have time to leave the eggs in the nest. She can only lay one a day and like sarah mentioned..if she is going to sit on them she will wait until she lays approx 10 eggs. the fact that she is laying in the nest and not all around the cage is a good sign. I would recommend that you take all the eggs after 9 to 10 days if by the she is not interested in brooding rather than taking the odd one each day or so. Also, if you collect them on day 9 or 10 and they are a bit dirty i would not wash them, the egg is porous and bactiria from outside the egg will soak through the shell. Alot of people wash the eggs with cold water wich is deadly to the chick, if you really feel you ever have to wash an egg only use warm water. Another thing, Sorry for going on, Quail are cleaver birds in a strange kind of way they sometimes roll an egg away from the nest as if they know its either bad of not fertile, i just posted a video of my quail with her chicks that she brooded but she did throw a few eggs out of the nest during the laying stage, mind you there were other quail in the pen with her wich could have laid in her nest and she knew it and was having none of it, or were they hers and gone and she knew they were not fetile ?

Thank you sooo much for the advice go on as long as you like as I like to listen and learn ;) By any chance will the eggs die if she never sits on them, as the ones left in there are cold, the male will sometimes sit on them but not the female!

  14. hello Jz, there is nothing to Die, at this stage before incubation starts they are just a regular egg like any other egg, think there is some good reading for you in this link, it covers all kind of incubation methods, do hope your male and female quail arn't related to each other or breeding is not a good idea

Hello ohh well that makes me feel better I was so scared that they would die without heat I was properly the more worried mother out of me and the quail ;) I got them from a privite breeder who told me they were not related at all which is good he got them from to seprate people so they most likely aren't. Haha I gave them a piece of cucumber last night and they love it and funy to watch them eat it :)

Just wondering, does anyone know why my female quail is sitting on the ground (not on her nest of eggs) and shaking her feathers and making a soft cooing noise while the male stands guard next to her (is hse laying) I never saw her lay her eggs but is that maybe what shes doing, p.s I have a new egg but only three eggs as 1 was found cracked in the cage and I didn't no what to do with it so I threw it away (this egg was found moved out of the nest with a small crack)

The soft cooing is a way for the female to call for a male. regarding the eggs, seeing that they are being cracked, if I was you I would remove each one as she lays it but dont but them in the incubator until u put them all in the same time. Once you have more quail and incubating is not so important, then leave them to see if she will sit. Right now you seem to really want chicks so play it safe and incubate as Quail rarely brood their eggs in captivity. i have kept quail for about 3 years and only seen it happen once which is right now.

I only have a home made incubator whcih isn't very effictive, but for the whole of last night she sat on the eggs and still is plus she had another one, so she seem to be fine at the moment :) but if anything does go wrong I will take them :)

  19. if you do remove them I hope you have read the link I shared on incubation as your discription of your incubator is a little concerning, it is a very serious, time consuming thing to be doing, and then you have to think of how you will raise the chicks if they hatch, they can't go straight back to mum, if she abandons eggs there's a good chance she won't except them as hers

I did read it and it was very helpful thank you :) I think I will just leave eegs with mum at the moment as she is sitting on them at the moment (along with the father) so hope that works out :)

  23. hello yes it probably would any change can upset a birds routine, perhaps best to wait to see if the incubation goes ahead and you get babies before introducing any more to the group

im incubating chinese painted quail, and am too a novice what is the difference between japanese and chinese? ive also got 5 day old English white, the eggs are HUGE compaired to the painted eggs! so excited!

i did want them to live togeather but learning more buy watching they are aggressive lil beggas!

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and looks like a duck then it could be a cow doing a duck impersonation.

The chinese quail is much smaller, about the size of a robin red breast and wanted mostly for picking up scraps droped by finches and budgies. The japenese quail comes in many colours, italian, english white, wild browns, texas AMs and many more but are all JAPENESE COURTUNIX QUAIL. they are larger than the chinese but larger again if you have the JUMBO japenese quail. jumbo quail lay larger eggs and the bird itself is big enough to eat. i dont mix my japenese quail with the chinese as they dont get along unless they are brooded and raised together. jumbo quail are calm birds unlike chinese painted quail that are very flighty.
hope this little bit of info helps

Hello :) I've been in Christchurch for the last few weeks so havn't been on here :) I am going home tomorrow so i am really excited about seeing my beautiful quails :) I also just brought an incubator, thermometer and a hygrometer so will test those out when i return home :) Also Crazychick Japanese quail and little buttons (Chinese painted) aren't the best cage mates, they may be fine but my Japs nearly killed my buttons :( Had to sell the buttons and just keep Japs :/ Anyway good luck with them anyway :)
