  1. Hi All,

Marie on the farmingfriends facebook page has asked,

Duck advice needed.... Jims "fruity" feelings have arrived with abundance, I'm a little concerned about Rosie as this seems to be every half an hour?? She won't have a crest left at this rate..... Is this normal? Marie

    Thanks for any advice.
    kind regards

  2. oh dear does sound a little excessive, poor Rosie, she really will go bald necked soon and then when Jim holds on she could get very sore, have heard of drakes actually causing bleeding.

So sounds like Rosie and Jim ( great names by the way ) may need to become a far bigger group or seperated some times through out the day to give poor Rosie a break

Thanks Mo, it's only happening in the pond at the moment so giving them full run of the garden rather than just their pen seems to have calmed things a little....As for seperating them.... I think they are super glued together!

  4. glad things have calmed for Rosie, I had to seperate my 5, 2 drakes and 3 girls ealier this year as one girl really was over mated until her neck was bald, I now have a couple and the other drake has two girls and things are alot happier here, seperation isnt easy but sometimes has to be done for the benefit of the girl, cruel to be kind as they say lol

perhaps better then to restrict their time on the pond. You may need to consider getting another female or two.

I love the thought of more girlies but nervous at the thought of spoiling what Rosie and Jim have together, I have never seen anyone/thing so close before.

Will Jims fruity side calm down? Is it seasonal? Or is this now a daily routine?

Poor Rosie hasn't even laid her first egg yet!

  7. hi marie yes adding new girls may give Rosie a break but also may just be ignored byt jim who will still favour rosie, its never straight forward sadly,
depending on the breed he may slow down soon, some stop all together over winter, mine are khaki campbells and slow down but don't stop, you have to decide for Rosies sake whats best to do, but if she were mine and was showing signs of damage to her neck I would defo seperate them for short periods of the day to give her a rest from randy Jim lol
if you're not getting eggs yet they are clearly young and hes probably just found something he likes doing lol x

    Typical male lol

He's a runner, she's a domestic crested (we think) they are both about 5 months old so if someone knows their usual habits please let me know.

If he's not going to calm down at all then I will be looking for another 2 ish girlies

runners are rather highly sexed but all ducks calm down in the winter as Mo says. The choice is yours really but there are ducks suited to a one to one ratio more than others and runners prefer a larger flock.

It's starting to look like my pen needs extending lol

Is it better to try and find 2 females around the same age as mine?

I'd love another runner as Jim is so funny to watch (when he's not doing his half hourly thing)
