one of my little hens was pecked last night really badly - they have a huge interesting pen with lots of hiding holes - could she have been got by a rat? or would a rat have taken her? her wounds are really bad on the back of the neck and chest - I have separated her with one other hen to keep her company - she is drinking eating and pecking about
    What more can I do?

  2. Hi Bexter,
she could have got spooked and flown upwards and damaged herself on the pen. Quail do have an upward flight when they are frightened.
If it doesn't stress her too much you could bathe her wounds and then dry her off and then give her plenty of rest as you are doing with her separated.
    Hope she gets better soon.
    kind regards

  3. hi Bexter, poor hen, I've just read your previous post and wonder if you are now getting them locked in at night or not, with the chest injury as well as neck it does sound to me more like she was attacked, can you see any where where a rat mink or anything else has got into the pen as my worry would be that it may come back and the next time it could be more devastating than this

Thank you for your kind messages re: my little sad white hen - she has now sadly died - she started to struggle to breathe and so we have had to let her go... very very sad - She was always the one that got pecked, so maybe she is more peaceful now - in quail heaven

  5. ahh so sorry to hear that, but would still have a good look around incase anything entered their pen this sounds like more than pecking from the other birds x
