feel ive failed this poor bird, handsome yet naughty!

i bought two chicks at easter, im a childminder ans what better way to teach the kiddlies about spring than rearing our own. Unfortunatly ebony started to crow, thankfully the neighbours love it, i do too

BUT yes'day the naughty lil bugga now 6 months chased one of the children up the garden, claws flying and all. I really wante to keep him but im likely to get sued if i keep him. Im dont know if anyone will re-home himas they are a pain in the arse but at the same time im not sure i could eat him either

What would you do, i was thinking i could contact an animal shelter ans swap him for a hen?

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and looks like a duck then it could be a cow doing a duck impersonation.

  2. could the chickens just be kept in a pen away from the children until he is older and maybe settles down, maybe one of the children, who I asume were very young have scared hurt or made him feel threatened in some way,

seems a shame to make a disision like this for one bad moment, nasty as it may have seemed at the time and have to add that even though i'm no expert if hens felt threatened in any way I would think they to could be nasty to

  4. oh its hard if the 2 of you cant agree, the child clearly spooked the cockrel and he in his mind saw a threat maybe to his hen and did whats natural im affraid, like i said there's no guarentee a hen wouldnt do the same especially if she were broody
if you do decide to sell him it wont be easy as people only want one male for obviuos reasons, so it would be simplar and kinder to sell them as a pair, you have to bear in mind they have a close bond and just selling him could leave her distressed and she may not even take to a new hen being introduced, they can be quite emotional creatures x

i think secretly my fella is keen on him so maybe if i give him the options a fence will go up lol, i didnt realise they were so emotional. they are so funny!

Hi, as Mo says they are very emotional and very protective of the or their wives .To him the child was a threat and he must be penned or you risk harm . Hope that was all it was and not that he is an untameable cock as you know from reading on the forum they are not so funny . Best wishes Mama .

Hi. When we first got hens, we got a cockeral too. He was a real softy with us and it lovely for my children to be around him. We have since had a couple of other cockerals, one which was so aggressive that we had to rehome him as soon as we could. He had been reared as a chick by us, so knew us well enough not to be threatened, but he attacked whoever entered the compound.
If you can't segregate your guy then I would find him a new home - it is not fair on him, and the children will also become more scared (which could stay with them) and could also possibly be harmed which you are obviously already aware of.
Hope you get a solution soon.

  8. We also have a 6month old cockerel who is becoming aggressive! Putting a fence up is the best way unless you re home him, at the moment we have an older cockerel, right softy, who puts him the younger aggressive cockerel in its place! Good luck! x
