Hen not using left leg

I have three 3 month old hens - hatched by myself.

One morning I woke up to find that 1 of my hens wasn't using her left leg and her "elbow" joint is twice the size of the other. I've tried researching about it and found the only reasonable explanaton is to be bumblefoot. I cleaned the foot and looked at it closely and it wasn't pusy and had no black scab. So I'm back to square one with no explanation. Ive been cleaning the foot and "elbow" with very salty warm water for the past 4 days and rubbing Terramycin over the leg but this doesn't seem to be working...?

    Anyone got a solution????

    Thanks..

  2. Hi JTaylor,
I am sorry to hear about your hen.

There is a condition called perosis which is a deformity of the leg bones. I have read that it is caused by a nutritional deficiency of manganese and that adding a manganese supplement to the feed for 3 to 5 days will help to prevent any new cases developing. Birds can become crippled and can die of starvation or need to be culled as there is no cure for affected birds.

Can you give your vet a ring and ask for advice over the phone?

Hope it's not perosis and that your hen recovers.
    Kind regards
