Is it possible to get a hen hatched from an incubator to sit a nest?

  1. Hi All,

Alice has asked about getting an incubator hatched hen to sit on a nest.

"Is it possible to get a hen hatched from an incubator to sit a nest? I have been told that they will not sit a nest. If they can how do I go about getting them started and if not do you have any information on a website that sells chicks that are hatched by a sitting hen? Alice"

My advice for getting a hen to sit is to put some pot eggs in a safe and sheltered nest or area where the hen likes to go, the pot eggs will encourage her to sit and lay eggs in this nest. Plenty of fresh, clean, dry straw in the nest area seems to encourage my hens to lay as well.

    Thanks for any advice.

    kind regards

  2. i'd have thought it was instinct and nothing to do with where they hatched surely, some will sit some won't and while you can encorage where to lay not sure you can force a bird to be broody x

  3. Hi Mo,
I think you are right, some of the guinea fowl and ducks I hatched have gone broody and some haven't, same with the hens I have some are more prone to going broody and sitting than others!
    Thanks for your thoughts.
    Kind regards
