I had a male Japanese Quail living in a giant rabbit cage all alone after his partner got out. I then brought a new female Japanese quail as a mate for him. But every time he even walks past her or even far away she with peak, attack, bite and rip his feathers out for no reason, she now owns the outside area while he stays hidden inside the den, she is very tame (same with him) but this has to stop as he is being harmed, any advice or ideas? Thank you :)

Hi Julia,
I am sorry to hear this about the quail, sometimes you get a bird that can be very agressive, if he is trying to mate with her she may not like it and be letting him know, although you would think that it was instinct to mate. Has the male got anything the matter with him, if so the female may be picking on him because of this and trying to establish herself higher in the pecking order. Is it possible to get some more females which may distract the female and also the males attention away from her.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.
Let us know how you get on.
kind regards
