    Good morning

There are a couple of unusual poos in the chicken area today - large expance of runny egg white looking liquid with dark brown objects in it. The shape of layers pellets but darker, longer and soft.

I've searched and the only similar photos would be at the end of the link provided. It seems that the hen would be thirsty and/or not eating enough and I'm not sure how we solve that. I will start worming today 'just incase'.

I can't see which hen is providing these samples and they all seem happy enough with tails up and scratching away this morning. The only ones with dirty feathers around the vents are the orpingtons, and that is quite normal for them!

    Any ideas? Thanks

  3. Hi Karen,
    I've added the pic above.

I found an excellent site that goes through what the illness may be due to colour of
    droppings.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Karen, Yes agree with you the pic seeming the same as your hens droppings. If it's down to thirst or not eating enough there isn't a way of forcing her to do either .The only reason a hen wouldn't eat and drink enough is if she wasn't well and yours are not showing signs of that .It could be a one off ,I hope so. You could try acv and garlic in the drinking water which does encourage them to drink as well as the benefits it gives. They have had a long winter and could do with a little boost perhaps ,maybe some poultry spice not sure you can that though. Hope it resolves itself .Mama

    Hi Mama

Thanks.. I have given them some mashed carrot which is good for their insides and we are off to a local 'farmers market' (I use that term loosely) to see if we can find anything else to help. We have run out of apple cider vinegar but will def put garlic in the water.

I have been watching the hens for ages and can't see which hen did these two poos and there are no signs of further ones. They all seem in good enough form so hopefully the cooked carrot will kick start it off.

    will keep you updated.. thanks!

    Morning everyone.

Still no signs of any poorly chicken, and no further strange poos yet thankfully.

We couldn't get any of the apple cider vinegar but had some poultry tonic, which we put in their water instead. Hopefully all will be well!

    enjoy your Sunday

  7. glad you dont have signs of poorly chickens Karen, one thing thats crossed my mind if this is outdoors is it possible its from an overhead bird and not actually one of your chickens, I saw something similar in my front garden where the ducks dont go x

  9. advice on chicken poo and compost please!

I'm going to be hopefully getting some of the used bedding from a local Freecycler's chickens soon, to go on the compost (obviously). Can anyone give me any hints on how much I should add to the compost at once? Don't want to upset the balance of my heap.

Mine is mixed with the straw from the coop and I just add it to my existing compost and treat it exactly the same. It rots down very quickly and helps everything else break down too.
