Khaki or White ??

(19 posts)

  1. Well having waited all last year to sell my house and move to where I could increase my duck family I have almost decided to just do it anyway
the thing I can't decide is do I stick with my khaki campbells or add some white for a different view, I don't expect problems as the sizes will be the same and i'm sure Treacle will be happy with anything wearing feathers, just wondered what you guys think x

actually might not be much of a choice to make I can't find any breeders locally of the white campbell, may look into other breeds of similar size

    Hi Mo

I think it is lovely to have a selection of colours/breeds.

We have an array of hen breeds and love looking at all the different colours. Even our neighbour commmented on it! There is nothing like a bit of variety, so I hope you manage to find some white campbells, or a different alternative breed of similar size etc.

    good luck in your quest!!

Oh why not have a couple of Debbie's ducks or have they all gone now? They would all be about the right size. You could also look for pekin or aylesbury - which are actually the smaller campbells as some people seem to think that is what they have because they are white.

  4. Debbie has re homed hers to a park somewhere, everything I have read say pekin and aylesburys are far bigger than campbells and seeing how the boys struggle to mate Candy I couldnt go bigger
have been looking and Abacot Rangers, Magpie and Orpingtons look hopefull and are also meant to be good broodies not sure what would happen crossing them with a khaki though
if anyone has these breeds i'd like to hear more about them please

No. I meant some people think they have aylesbury or pekins when in fact they have campbells. I wouldnt suggest you got bigger ducks, but then aylesburys are much slower and more placid lol

  6. lol because you wrote You could also look for pekin or aylesbury I thought you were suggesting it
thanks for the link but again crossing with appleyards would be worried about size again...laughed at the comment crossed for vigour khakis have enough of that as it is lol

I have found somewhere that sells the 3 breeds I mentioned but would still like to hear from anyone who keeps any of these breeds as to what they are like

  8. ok finally found 2 buff orpingtons local and of course the offer of Saras, Pete is a little bit worried about the buffs going broody as I did say I wouldnt have ducklings until we move and have room to keep them all if I couldn't sell them, or refused to sell them lol
so looks like its whites after all, have now found 3 breeders not to far off so decision time soon, funny as looking back it was whites I wanted in the first place but just fell for my khakis when I saw their beautiful colours lol

    Hiya Mo.
I keep 1 white campbell male, 1 dark campbell female (which is the same size as khaki campbell) and 1 magpie female. The magpie is much larger than the campbells. They all get on very well. I have cherry valleys which are smaller and quite rotund but they are lovely, they do the duck waddle properly! And then for good measure I have an indian runner. I dont see any problems with the ones I have. They all seem happy as pie with each other. Campbell (my white campbell boy-thats this name) loves them-well.....he humps them, lol. x

  10. well as some of you now know i'm the very happy owner of 3 white campbell girls, it was late afternoon yesterday when we got home so I though after an hour and a half car journey it was best to put them straight in the shed, ive split the pen so they can see each other but for now are seperate
my original lot were very funny, they came running over as soon as they heard the new girls, who are very loud by the way but didnt go into the shed for quite a while, they just peeped in from the door way lol
I watched this morning via the camera and the normal bashing around and misbehaving from my original group with the new girls just watching as if to say..what an earth is going on

I am for now just going to take it day by day or hour by hour, before deciding when to let them meet the others out in the garden,
first thing I let the new girls out and got them round and into one of the pens, they have food and water and of course the pool which one has already worked out you have to go up the steps to have a swim, the other 2 arnt quite as bright and are trying to leap in from the side,
happy to say I also got an egg this morning from one of the new girls :) xx

Hope all goes well with the mix Mo. I'm sure it will, I don't have White Campbells, only Khaki, and they all came by accident - rescue birds.

  14. Lol thanks Kate, they all seem to be getting on fine, the new girls are like wild teenagers wanting to play all the time and the 2 year olds have turned into OAPS not very tolerant lol
the only scuffles we have seen is from Sugar our middle sized kc girl, she has a couple of times krept up behind a new girl and given what can only be described as a kung fu kick, which strangley she did to one of my other girls Toffee the week before getting the new girls, just this afternoon she did it again but the new girl this time turned round and chased her off lol
the 2 boys still dont seem to realise they are girls for them, they go running when they hear the girls splashing in the pool then just stand and watch before walking away, one boy did get in the pool yesterday when a girl was in but as soon as she turned towards him he flew out lol
we have had a fab afternoon leveling some soil and moving some plants and as you would guess takes twice as long with 8 little helpers, I think they will be very sad to see the nice brown soil covered in turf soon, but needs must lol

Oh Mo, We were doing similar work today, but not for turf. For my new walled veg garden. (well, it's fenced really)

We borrowed 10 piglets to turn the turf over, root out the weeds and fertilise. They went home last Saturday and now,it's prepare and improve. I'm so looking forward to a real veg garden.

Do keep us informed about the introductions. I love the idea of the 'kung fu kick' I wish you'd filmed it.

  16. lol Katy what a clever idea borrowing pigs to turn over the ground saves alot of back work for yourself, I didn't get that kung fu kick on camera it happened so quick but the one on Toffee in the shed I managed to get on film as it was recorded already on one of the cctv cameras lol
