  1. Help! Sexing quail

Hi, I've recently bought 60 quail- I had asked for 50 hens and 10 cocks. When the guy was putting them into boxes for me he was turning them upside down to check the sex or just looking at there chest to see whether they were speckled or not. I've got them home and they are settling in well but i've noticed that some of the "hens" are calling.

Please excuse my naivity but is it like in chickens where only the males call (crow)?? I paid for them believing they were hens and obviously I dont want to have too many males in with the remaining hens.

    Help!

    Hi ZP,
    Welcome to the farmingfriends forum.
You can tell the gender from the chest of the quail. One way to determine the gender of a Coturnix quail is to look at the colour of the plumage on the breast. Male Coturnix quail have a red tinge to their breast plumage.

Female Coturnix quail have a creamy breast plumage dappled with more brown flecks.

here is a link to a post I have written on the farmingfriends website with a photo of a male and female japanese quail. http://www.farmingfriends.com/quail-gender-identification/
Also the males make a shrill call whereas the females are very quiet and make more of a quiet cooing type noise.
The males also have foam ball droppings.
I hope that you have got the right amount of females.
    Kind regards

  5. Hi Lisa,

Congrats on getting your quail. The males call is quite shrill and it will depend on the hut you have for them and how close to the house whether you can hear him!
Yes they can be given layers pellets, mine have always had layers pellets.
They are ground nesting birds so don't need an upstairs in their hut. Mine have never roosted, not even the males. The are better kept on a concrete base with straw on shavings as their feets can get toe balled up with droppings etc if they are on grass for too long.
They like to dust bathe in dry soil or sand.
I have mine in an aviary hut. If they are spooked they will fly upwards and can hurt their heads so something soft on the ceilng can help this. Mine don't like it if I wear red/pink, they start flying about all over the place.
Let me know if you have anymore questions.
    All the best

Hi Lynne, I have 11 quail all hatched last year and I have no idea if they are related!!! Did hatch 38 but had to thin the ranks as most of them were male. Always the way! My quail live in the dog run with attached kennel and I feed them Marriages Quail mini layer pellets which they love. Usually get 11 - 13 eggs a day but they have suddenly stopped laying which is odd. Enjoy them as they are great birds.

Hi Sara is there any way to sex very young quail chicks thanks dougy

    Posted 5 years ago #
  15. Hi Dougy,
I have always waited until they were about 6 to 8 weeks old. I imagine that you can vent sex them like hen chicks but have never done this myself.

    Kind regards

Hi, eveyone. i love keeping and breeding quail. the quail that Sarah has pictured at the top of this post are what i call the PHARAOH QUAIL and along with the golden Italian quail they are the best for keeping as they can both be sexed from three weeks old by their breast feathers, the femails being more speckled on the breast feathers. they are the same breed just diferent colourings. You can breed an Italian with a pharaoh and I think its the italian colour that is more domanent which will hatch 2 italians to 1 pharaoh. you will not get a cross breed that looks like both of them. Always best to have an un-related mail if you are breeding and incubating but if you are keeping them for pets its not so important as they very rarely incubate their eggs, but it can happen as i have witnessed and when they do brood their own they make fantastic mothers,
