bair spot

    My Two week old mallard duckling has a small bair spot wit no feathers and he sometimes scratches it is this somrthing to be concered about.

    Where is the bald spot George ? as one of my goslings had one .Mama

    Ok ,don't think you should worry yet.Could it be caused by the feeder they have ? Mama

    Sure this is normal as they grow so fast and it will feather up soon .What a worry new babies are .Maybe another member can suggest too .It is Mothers day in the UK so all mummys may be relaxing but sure someone will give another opinion .

    I think Mama is probably right, their skin often grows faster than their feathers at this age, but if you are worried I would put some antiseptic on it just to be on the safe side.

Hi George at this age ducklings can begin to look very tatty as their real feathers begin to come in and replace their down, over the next few weeks they will look even worse,mine certainly did, also they can look bald when wet, we had another member last year that thought her ducklings had bald spots but they hadnt once dry and fluffed up, if yours definatly has a bald spot on its back and is scratching alot I would be checking for possible mites and watching carefully to see if it is being pecked at by any of the other ducklings

    Hi George, it could be red spider mite. Have you checked looking very closely at the bald areas, particularly as he is itchy
