This morning I found a young blackbird, quite large, sitting rather lost on the patio fully feathered. I picked it up and put it amongst the growth of the flower border to hide it as our cat was around. The mother was around so it must have just fledged.
Is this early to have such a large fledgling? Most of the larger birds, doves etc have not reached this stage yet.

Hi It is rather early but not impossible. Are you certain it was a fledgling? It would be spotty brown with a shortish tail and maybe yellow bits still on its beak. Here are some interesting blackbird photos http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/b/blackbird/feathers.aspx

  3. I had one last week I thought was a fledgling turns out it was a female sitting on eggs I had seen just popping out to do a bit of sunbathing, they can look young and tatty when doing this but no its not to early and a neighbour already has collard dove fledglings in her garden, one she did have to rescue from one of her cats

Definitely a fledgling, a large one too but not big enough for a fully grown bird. No real tail feathers and just a few baby feathers still on the chest. I could have thought it was a thrush except for the mother blackbird. There is no mistaking fledgling behaviour or the panicky mother hopping around on the roof of the shed just aboved me telling me to leave it alone it belongs to her.

No, I'm hoping the small bird my dog was busy eating on the lawn wasn't it. I could hardly make out it was a bird by the time I found her with it.
