Duckling with broken leg at hip

(9 posts)

  1. Hi All,
Stevie on the farmingfriends facebook page http://www.facebook.com/farmingfriends has a duckling with a broken hip and is wanting some advice.

"Sad :( ive got a 5 week old duckling with a broken leg at the hip! ive tries spinting and imobilizing the duck compleatly but the limp is getting worse and its starting to look a bit peaky now. I know if i take it to the vet they will want to put it under to do xray and it will almost certainly die, so do i take it to be PTS or is there something else i can try? i think the other one will pine if it goes! Stevie"

    Can anyone give advice.
    Kind regards

  3. Hi All,
Sarah posted this link on the facebook page relating to another duckling but thought it might be useful.

  4. we all asume the worst in these situations but my advise would be to take it to the vets, there is no reason to assume it will die just for being under anistetic as vets know what they are doing and will possibly just sedate anyway, I think it can't be left untreated and can't be home treated either if it is broken at the hip

I'm sorry to say that this is so difficult to deal with. I've just been through the same thing myself and I would say that Mo's advice is right.
    Best of luck.

thanks guys, the silly duck is having me on i think, i put it in a big bowl of water i thought a bit og hydrotherapy and the water will take the weight off it. The duck that hobbles about swam with no problems, (i made sure it could touch the bottom incase it was hurting to swim) but he really enjoyed himself, looks so much better all clean and erked right up. when he was in the water i noticed he was using the poorly/broken leg to lift up and sratch his head! Ive put the other duckling out with the others today and pooly duck is happily sat with his poorl leg streched out. im going to continue to splint support and see what improvement there is.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and looks like a duck then it could be a cow doing a duck impersonation.

What makes you think it is broken at the hip? For duck health, swimming is the best remedy and if he is using his leg it may not be broken, but could be sprained.

A silly duck it is not but lame in one way or another as Sarah says it may be a sprain and not a break .If it was a break a vet is needed as none of us could fix it with all the best of intentions .Hope the little one continues to do well .Sorry katy you have been through this and the outcome cannot have been good for going by your short post.

Thanks Mama. Yes it did not end well. It was whilst you were away, I had a very bad week,it's all on fb.

If the duck has broken any part of the leg it needs to see a vet, however, if it is moving the leg at all then it is probably a strain (disclocation?) of some sort.
