Mixing quail breeds

I am new to quail and at present have 4 Japanese hens. They are in a purpose built (apartment) within a large chicken run, shoulder height. If in the future i wanted to take on some button quail hens can i mix them or should different quail breeds be kept strictly seperate? There will be no males involved as i don't want to breed them. Can they spend time down in the main area with the bantams and ducks to pick up bits and bobs or is that a 'no go'. Any advice welcomed.

  2. Hi Bertie,
Yes you can mix quail breeds, you can get them used to each other before adding them. You can add them at night so that they are less responsive, or you can put your old and new quail in a new pen so neither are territorial about the area, it's a new area for both as sometimes the ones that live in the area first will pick on the new ones.
I have read that you shouldn't mix quail with hens or ducks.
    kind regards

Thanks very much for the advice. I would love to get a couple of Chinese painted quail, button? hens at some point so it will be nice to think they can all share together.
